Queen Latifah

I've found a lot of times on kids Nickelodian (sp?) and Disney shows, there's always the tolken fat kid who is the comic relief. They don't have much of a character, just say and do funny things. Then there's the one heart-felt episode every once in a while where they mention how much it's hard to be the fat kid, not quite fitting in and no one taking you seriously. For someone who was the fat kid in school, I always felt if I had the loud, funny personality of those people on TV, people would like to be around me cause at least they'd get a laugh out of it. But unfortunately I'm more the quiet, observing type, so I couldn't even fit into that niche set out for us by TV.

That's one of my beefs with TV (mostly female roles, not quite so much with male roles); You're either super skinny, or FAT, and the fact that you are FAT is part of your character. There's rarely a "normal" healthy person, cause they wouldn't fit into any niche. What ever happened to "healthy"? I saw a Queen Latifa Jenny Craig add, and that's one thing I really liked about what she said, that it was to get healthy and live a healthier lifestyle. No mention about pounds, dress sizes, bikinis. Just feeling better, being healthier. I think that's a really good message.

Yeah, its like Drake and Josh, josh was always the awkward obese one. He's lost a lot of weight now, and all of a sudden hes very popular with girls in the show and stuff. I kind of miss thr chubby josh, but good for him.

I was VERY disappointed when I saw the commercial with Queen Latifah for the first time. I for one have always looked up to her as a big, beautiful star that was always supporting herself, and always making bigger people feel better about themselves.
It did say it was just to be healthier, but whether thats actually true, whos to say?

I think that show Drake and Josh is wrong because it pictures the thin child as the superhip one and the fat kid is sort of the loser. As a childminder I can see that Josh is a very positive character, but mind you the kids (8 and 6 and half years old) do not see it and they comment a lot on how Josh is sooooo fat and stuff like that.

It is one of my pet peeves the whole big person only plays storylines in which being big is the argument and gay person can only play the part where being gay is the argument. I would love to see a normal love story with a bigger person, or homosexual people, without it all being about them being different, because honestly being a size 14 (UK) is the norm!
I did not know Queen Latifah was trying to lose weight, but if she wants to get healthy, good for her!

I do believe that she wants to get healthier, and that will involve losing some weight. I also love her as she plays normal, sexy roles and her weight isn't the main focus all the time (anyone remember when she played a guest role on Fresh Prince?). I'm concerned of the backlash she'll get from people thinking she's buying into the ideal that you have to be skinny, blah blah blah. The fact of the matter is, weight and health do have a relationship. I don't know anything about her blood pressure and cholesterol and all those lovely things, but at her size she is in a high risk group, especially high risk for developing diabetes with her being black. She will lose some weight while getting healthier. The unfortunate thing is that that's what people fill focus on, her getting slimmer. Too bad it's not as main-stream to post cholesterol levels and VO2 to show that you are getting healthier, not just numbers on the scale and inches on the tape. Either way, she's not going to be able to make everyone happy. Some will love it and some will hate it.
