Pushup and BenchPress, the difference?

I do bench press in my workout routine everyweek. I have not done any pushup for a while, because I thought bench press works on my chest and arms, so it's not neseccery to do pushup. Yesterday, I tried to do some push-up. I was surprised that I can only do 40 consecutively. I could do about 60 before. So my question is bench press doesnt increase the strength and endurance in your arms? I bench about 135 reguarly by the way.

It all depends on what kinds of exercises you're doing. Pushups tend to promote muscular endurance simply because you don't have enough upper body weight to achieve maximal force production using them. Therefore, you end up doing more reps at less weight == endurance workout.

You can get a really good endurance workout with a bench press in the same way. More reps at less weight.

To build on what Fil said:

Bodyweight exercises like pushups use many many muscles in your body all working together to complete the exercise, that's why the best way to get good at them is to do them frequently.

SilverProphet,

I have found the reverse to be true in the trainees that I have had and with myself; the stronger I get in bench, the more pushups I can push out. I also found that my 1 arm push ups went up quite a bit.

But the previous two posts are correct, you can achieve muscular endurance or endurance-strength by using a lighter weight and pushing out more reps. The bench press increases your horizontal pushing ability, which is what a push up is-a horizontal pressing.
