I thought salt was added to raise the boiling point of the water...
the wanna be chef in me says pasta is very bland and really needs salt for some flavor -the only way you can put flavor into the pasta is to cook it with salt (and several cloves of garlic) in the water... that's why salt is added.. and it should be A LOT of salt so like it's almost sea water...

this thread has really drifted....

you don't need to put salt in with pasta or rice when cooking. I never do. but I don't like the taste of salt.

Yeah it sounds quite strange too me as well. That is why I ve started this discussion a few days ago. But I read about theme in quite many magazines. But it must be wrong if none of you has ever heard of it. Nevertheless it would be great as I love pineapple and I wouldn't care eating nothing but pineapple for a few days :)

When I'm eating 'healthily' I do not salt anything...

BUT- When our maid makes rice, beans, the whole spread (we're in brasil) she sautés onions, and garlic in olive oil for a bit- adds the rice- adds w/e amount of water and then a pinch of salt. I've made it before without the salt and it just isn't as good :(
