Protein?

How much protein do i need to be eating daily? I'm a 5'8" 160lb female .. i do cardio 1hr a day 4-5 days a week ... i just started eating protein bars b/c someone suggested i wasnt getting enough calories and did not have near enough protein to loose weight ... Yesterday i ate more protein than i think i have in my life but fitday says its still only like 25% ... but the protein bar i ate said 30% so how come those don't correlate (given i also ate another protein type bar with 20% and a bunch of chicken) ...and yall reccommend staying below 30% fat for the day right? Also what is a ideal amt of calories for a protein bar? is 200 good or is that too many? Seems like i'm eating too much to be loosing weight especially since when i was eating less i didnt really loose then?

I'm your height, but weigh a bit less, so I don't know how much that makes a difference.

I'm trying to get between 80-100g a day, but sometimes fall short, and sometimes end up a little higher. I've been having the Met-Rx Big100 meal replacement bars some days. It's got 360 calories, 5g fat, and 27g protein. But, it is as a meal replacement, so I have that as lunch or something. I also usually have a protein shake (EAS Whey Protein) with half water and half milk (4oz each), which has about another 25-28g of protein, after working out at night.

I also usually do HIIT (20 mins) after weights about 3-4 days a week, though I think that with Martial Arts 2-3 days a week is leading to over-training :)

Ultimately weight loss comes down to burning more calories than you ingest, but eating regularly throughout the day and getting your protein can mean more calories burned. Protein is used to build muscles and tissue. The more healthy and large your muscles are, the more calories you burn throughout the day. It's not just about weight loss either, it's just about getting a healthy amount of protein.

As far as your protein requirements, you want to get about .8 - 1.2 g of protein per lbs of lean body weight each day. This should amount to roughly 30% of your daily caloric intake (NOT 30% of your RDA which is what's listed on product packaging).

Ohhh that makes more sense fil :) So on fitday ... their percentages are of daily caloric intake not RDA ... ok well thats good ... what percentage should my fat and carbs be do you know?

Aword4u ... r u female as well? just curious .. martial arts threw me off :) Ya i've been eating a protein bar after workout as my snack meal and a morning start trail mix bar for my morning snack meal(lots of protein and they're good!)

Thanks :)

Yes, re-started working out a little over 2 months ago, and took up martial arts for the first time just over a month ago. It's a lot of fun, I do it with my husband :)

I actually keep thinking I need more protein as well. Even though I'm eating pretty healthy I still seem to end up with too many carbs in my diet.
