Protein powder?

Hey everyone!

Sooo, I just made my first protein shake today and well, it's left me less than eager to drink it again tomorrow. I followed the instructions on the side of the tub, that said to mix one scoop of powder with 6-8oz of water in a glass. When I tasted it, it felt like I was drinking watered down milk. Is it supposed to be like that, or am I missing anything? Is there something I can do to make it taste less "bleh" and more enjoyable? I'll drink it the way it is now, if I have to, but I'm hoping there's a different way to make this stuff. If anyone could leave any tips or suggestions, that'd be GREATLY appreciated.

Sorry to tell you, there is no way to make it taste better, unless you mix it as a smoothie or something.

I have tried all the flavors, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cookies n' cream, you name it, and they all taste well like a bleh version of the flavour.

But I have found out lately that instead of mixing with water, if I use 8ozs. of vanilla soy milk, it taste a little more appealing.

Hope this helps:)

A few thing you could try are adding more water or using less water to alter the consistency and strength of the flavor; though if you use less water you should drink additional water by itself soon after as protein requires water during the digestive process.
You could also try adding something like honey or half of a banana to sweeten the shake and add some additional potassium (which depending on your diet may be beneficial if you do a lot of high intensity workouts).
If all else fails try to live with it until you have used it up then switch brands. Ask around and see what others like; personally I like Dymatize Elite protein powder.

I like to freeze bananas and make shakes out of them, so I think i'll just add the powder and blend it in with that. I'm not sure what brand to choose, or if it really matters. My cousin likes to work out a lot, and he told me brand doesn't matter too much, though he prefers Gold Standard Whey or something like that. Anyway, thanks for the input =]

I just make my protein shakes with milk, so it's like double milk deliciousness ;).

If you're taking calories into account, just work it in. Milk itself is a tremendous food to take after a workout:

I take my Whey (chocolate or strawberry) with milk and ice from the blender.

Most powders do come out a little gritty but not too bad and barely noticeable from a blender. Not much to put up with when you consider the long term benefits of a 30g protein infusion.

True that. If I'm in the gym and have a couple bucks I go this route. Otherwise I'm too lazy. And I'll have to clean the dang blender :D

If you can do half skim milk, half water it makes a huge difference. Or all skim milk, depends on what your goals are.

At one point I got protein powder, tossed it and the flavoring with water and found it totally bleeeeh. Tried it with milk, and not only did it taste good to me, my husband's 'sip' to taste it turned into the whole glass :p

I also like mixing it in the blender with frozen fruit. You can get away with less milk this way, and you get some fruit servings in. I think my favorite mix is a strawberry/pineapple blend, although dark cherries, and a Pomeberry blend (pomegranate, blueberry, raspberry and blackberry) have all worked well.

I like to use unflavored protein powder and then add a bit of vanilla and sweetener as well.

Also have a friend who mixes it with greek yogurt, I haven't gotten to that just because I normally thicken it to 'shake' consistency with ice cubes and the frozen fruit.

Hey I have some whey protein that tastes pretty good and put in a blender comes up super smooth. I hope it's OK for me to post the brand. I buy mine on line but I think you can find it in health stores as well. Jarrow Formulas it's 100% natural and no added hormones. only 4g sugar and 6 carb per serving. I use the Vanilla or Chocolate ( the chocolate is really good) there's also plain
Here's how to get it super smooth. Use part ice and water for the amount of water, add a few drops of extract for extra flavor. and blend until ice is well blended, while your blender is running on low dump you power in and pulse it a few times to help mix well then run on high for about 1 min. Sometimes I add fruit but most of the time I have it just plain. Make sure you don't use more water than it says for the serving or it will taste watered down. This way of blending may work with any brand I just haven't tried any other brands yet.

PS I have been loosing weight slowly and can tell I have built some muscle and gotten much stronger and I'm 54 female!

So I made a smoothie today when I got back from the gym. This is what I did, and it tasted so much better, though there is a bit of an after taste.

1 frozen banana
4 frozen strawberries (didn't plan to, but when I saw them in the fridge I thought it'd taste good)
1/2 cup of low-fat milk
4 ice cubes
1 scoop of protein

Blended it all together, and I must say, this was a much better experience than the first.

Swoofie work out how much protein is in this smoothie, then work out much protein would be in the smoothie if you drank it with only 1 cup of milk and no protein powder.

Run all the ingredients through the nutritiondata. com website calorie counter. Gives you all the info on what's in a food. Though i guess for the protein powder you will have go by what's on the packet. Although they might have a breakdown on that too.

I usually do 50/50 with milk (soya or rice/oat/coconut, I'm lactose intolerant and like to switch it up between these) and water, makes it less watery and doesn't give too many calories than a whole glass of milk.

Couple things come to mind....

First, not all whey protein is created equal. Some of it does taste nastier than others.
Second, not all of it mixes very well either.
The best (and cheapest) I ever found, was Wellement's from Costco (6lbs fore $28) but of course, they discontinued it :( So now they carry Muscle Milk, 6lb for $36.... and it doesn't even taste as good !

But anyway, nowadays, I'm like a living food processor, so whey protein, or pretty much anything else I put down my pie hole 1) tastes anywhere from not too bad at all, to freaking awesome ! And 2) it's shredded and digested so fast, that heck, if I didn't particularly enjoy it, it will be a distant memory anyway, in like 15 or 20 minutes :) LOL

Using a blender tends to make it thicker / creamier. Yes, you can use milk, but I don't really drink milk anymore, nor do I eat ice cream, and almost zero cheese nowadays either. I do drink orange juice with calcium though.
