Will walking build any muscle in the legs or thighs I know its good for your heart and a simple way to drop calories but what else

I do a lot of walking -I can't say for certainthat it's built any muscles in my legs but over the summer when iw as doing my 15 - 18mile training walks -m y legs got some serious soreness for a while... and my legs are fairy muscular -though they don't have al ot of strength in them..

thanx I was just woundering cause I walke 1hr-1.5hr every night Im looking to build up some muscle so just finding some good ways to go about it.

I tell ya what though I need to make a plan on weight lifting I was doing bad I was working the same muscles too hard I went to the gym today and was like I cant do this I am too sore.

Why don't you just run/jog for a half an hour? Jump on the elliptical for fifteen minutes and you'll burn more calories then your 1.5 hour walk.

As for walking - It's great. I like to walk and then jog for a bit. While it may not be a great muscle builder i find it the best mental work out as i can clear my head.

As for weights - You only need to work out each muscle once per week. While i'm not lifting weights atm as i'm too fatigued from swimming 1500m every day what i use to do was do my chest/arms on monday, shoulders/back on wednesday and legs on friday. I used mostly compound lifts and that pretty much covered most muscle groups. Less is more when it comes to weights and you will see results so quickly.

You only need to work out each muscle once per week.

You should optimally be working out each muscle more frequently than that.

Check the stickied threads in the exercise forums. You can and should work out each individual more than "once per week"

If you are interested in starting to build muscle in your legs, read the stickies in that forum, then come back here with any questions.

Walking as good as aerobics?

Over the last 8 months ive been a complete gym junkie, ive practically lived there. And at the moment im getting really bored of going and i think i need a break away from the gym. But i still want to exercise, so i mapped out a route that is around 4 miles. If i did this walk 6 times a week would i have the same results as say doing a aerobics class 6 times a week?

Any tips or info is mucho appreciated :D Thanks in advance :seeya:

I'd disagree for those within their first year of weight lifting, more then once per week isn't necessary when they can have a 3 or 4 day split and work out often enough with mainly compound exercises. Overdoing it is why people fail to see results and often injure themselves while lifting especially with free weights.

Walking is great!

Morning,

Walking is wonderful! Even if you can't walk faster than a drowsy parakeet, it still gets you out and gets you moving. Back when I first started my get-healthy lifestyle, I could only really walk for exercise...but wow, did that help me get into a much better shape.

Regarding becoming one with the iron, I do that twice a week generally. It's one of the best things anyone can do (in my opinion of course) - not only does it help beef up your metabolism, but is also gives you rather attractive muscles as well. And then you can wear sleeveless karate gi's and other sexy things too! :)

Walking did help me build muscles on my lower body. I walk daily and most of the 8 miles are hills.
Walking made all other exercise easier. Eliptical is easy. Strength training is super easy for my lower body but still very challenging for my upper body. That could also be a female gender thing ;-)
