Proper way to walk?

So I have been pretty inactive the past year..I clean up my house, and do pet related chores...but I usually take frequent breaks. Today I decided to go out for a long walk with one of my more active dogs(I haven't actually walked anywhere long distance for several months to a year, and I don't usually walk short distance much either..I take my dogs to dog parks so THEY can get exercise and I can sit on my butt!). After about 4-5 blocks my calves started burning..which is unusual. I didn't stretch though, how important is stretching? Would that have prevented my problem? It hurt for another several blocks...and I started jogging cause my dog was wanting to go faster then I was going, but I could only do that for about half a block cause my legs were burning even worse!! I did end up walking 2 miles to my friends house, and had my brother pick me up and take me home, cause I for sure couldn't walk back! I should be taking baby steps..but how do you gradually step up to walking more? Last year (before I gained 30 more pounds) I walked 7 miles (it did take me about 4 hours to do that, but I wasn't in too much pain when I was done). I only walked 2 and my legs are STILL burning!! I guess I have become even more out of shape.

How should go about getting back into exercise? Should I start out increasing the blocks I walk gradually?

Any input would be appreciated!

It looks like we have started nearly on the same weight and looking to end up near the same weight. Currently I try and walk 8 miles (12km) a day extra as exersize. I have allways loved walking and have allways not been able to sit down for too long even tho being this big. I think it sounds like the burning sensation you are having is something to do with your muscles and possibly trying to do too much too soon. The only advise I could give is that you would be better off trying to do a lot smaller walks but more frequently. Building up strenth in your legs after a months or so of this then start increasing the distance until you get back to one long walk.

starting slow and managable is the easiest way to get yourself started and stay with it... if you do too much too soon you might get sore and frustrated and not get back to it for a while.. so start walking at a pace you can manage - then gradually increase speed and/or distance you're walking... and do keep trackof what you're doing so you can see yourself progress.

I notice myself that even though I've been walking for what seems like forever.. I still can get soreness if I'm walking with someone else at a pace that's not my own.. Like if I walk slower than I normally walk - then i really feel it in my hips and my front thighs... so you really need to find your pace that works for you..

Dunno about you Mal but even after walking 8 Mile (12km) a day, as soon as I finish and take a rest I can feel my nerves / muscles twitching. I usually complete this distance slightly under 2 hours. But I have been doing this for some time but not as frequently since start on my lifestyle change. As we both have posted here the best way is to start small and work your way up. Which is the way most exersize should be done.
