pricing to expect

Thanks so much for your advice, everyone. The whole situation just didn’t seem right to me, but I wasn’t sure what was the norm – so I’m glad I asked!
I really love what I’ve experienced of martial arts so far, and don’t want to give up on the whole affair. Last night I did some searching online for dojos that are in my area, and found out there is a small Tae Kwon Do place that’s even closer to me than this karate school is. I called them, and the instructor set up two private introductory lessons that will give me an idea about their facilities, his teaching methods, the fighting style, etc. From what I can tell, it sounds modest and privately owned – not one of these “McKarate” fighter factories. Once I sit down with him and go over financials I’ll come back here and get your opinions.
Oh, one more question – I got a free karate gi out of that introductory month with that karate place. Can I use it for Tae Kwon Do, or are their uniforms different? I’d hate to have to buy another…

Depends on the school. In my experience, some schools require their own gi with their logo on it or something, others just require a plain white gi, others require just sweat pants and a t-shirt.

I agree with the above, any school that requires a long term contract is probably a rip off. It takes at least a few months to see if a school, teacher and style are good for you. Any good scholl should be willing to let you pay on a monthly basis until you are comfortable there.

IMHO it is the teacher that makes the school, not the style or anything else! And the best teachers are not always the best fighters, look a the head teacher as well as his senior students to see where you will after a few years invested in this school.

Tae kwon do gis are usually different than Karate gis. The TKD gi is more of a "shirt" that you put on almost like a T shirt. The only real restrictions that karate schools have normally is color of gi and what kind of patches you can use on it. TKD sometimes are odd because they like having the school name silk screened on the back.

When I started Karate the lessons were £1.50 for 2hours!!!!

Now my sensei charges £6 for 90mins! Same as most places round me.

Isn't 6 pounds like 12 american dollars?

thats pretty good, considering my sensei charges 10 dollars for a 60 minute private lesson.

Hello again everyone. I went to the Tae Kwon Do dojo last night for my first introductory lesson, and found it to be a COMPLETELY different environment – for the better. It was modest, independently owned/operated, and didn’t have the sterile ambiance that the other place has. I think I learned more in my half hour there than I have in my three weeks at the karate place.
As for financials, he told me right up front that there would be an initial $60.00 fee (which would be deducted from the cost of my first month), and then about $75.00 per month for every month I chose to attend from that point forward (no obligation to continue).
Does this sound reasonable, or can I still do better? I’m assuming I’ll still have to pay for a gi…

As far as the financials, it sounds reasonable. I pay 55 bucks a month for training, and the cost for new students in my dojo is now 65 bucks.

As long as the training and the school are up to snuff (which from the attitude and the fact you actually learned something) I think you may have a good TKD school.

What do you have to lose? If you don't like it, you can always find somewhere else to train :)

Saphron - who cares what everybody else is paying. If you enjoy it and you can afford it then go.
