Pretty disillusioned...

As my weight was creeping over 16.5 stone and my forties beckoned I figured I'd better do something about my weight before it got too late.

I have a desk job, so in terms of activity I'm pretty sedentary although I try to take a walk every day. I've always thought my diet was pretty good in general - no junk food, I'm not really into sweets or crisps and I don't even have sugar in my coffee, but something obviously was wrong, so a couple of weeks ago I thought "right!" and started to get serious.

For two weeks I've been a good boy - no snacks in between meals, nothing with sugar in it, no alcohol, muesli for breakfast and smaller portions of food. I even went to the cinema and didn't have popcorn, which was a very odd sensation.

I resisted the urge to weigh myself and set myself what I thought was a reasonable goal of losing a couple of pounds a week. Then today, when two weeks were up I weighed myself.

I'd gone from 16st8lbs (232lbs) to 17st (238lbs)!!!!!!! :eek2:

All that deprivation and I'd PUT ON ALMOST HALF A STONE!

To say I'm disappointed is a bit of an understatement. I mean, what am I doing wrong? I can't think what else to cut out to be honest.

No need to worry, it can take a couple of weeks before the good stuff starts to happen. The weight increase isn't necessarily body fat, it could very well be water. In fact, if you're on a normal (-500) calorie deficiency, it's highly unlikely that your body will store body fat. Weight also depends on the time of the day.

Nah, keep taking those walks 5-6 days a week and progress is bound to come, assuming nutrition is under control. However, don't eat less than necessary as it will only harm you. :)

Now, put the scale away and take a tape measure and measure your waist, hips, thighs and wrists. Then wait two more weeks and try again.

Weight is a relatively innacurate measure of fitness, you gained 6 lbs, but of what? Water? Muscle? probably not fat.

How do your clothes fit?

Make sure (if you are not already) to weigh yourself at waking, before you eat or drink anything.

Don't lose heart it will work, if you adopt a fit, healthy lifestyle, your body will adapt, just as it has adapted to your former lifestyle.

Best Regards,

David C.

Exactly my point, great post. "Tape measure", so that's what it's called in English! I was looking for that word but I'm merely a Swede so it was kind of tough. Thanks. :p
