Prefer to train at home or in a gym?

Hi there, just wondering how many work out at home as compared to heading to a gym. Any preferences on home gym equipment, or if heading out to a gym, which program?

thanks,

David

I always train at home. It's alot easier because it's your equipment and you can do whatever you want with it and its very convenient to have your own weights set and treadmill at home and not have to share it with others. You also don't look stupid if you fk something up lol. And all i got is dumbells and a bench, no machines.

I like both. I typically use the gym but I have been known to drag out my tire and flip it around and throw the keg and pound the tire with my sledgehammer.

If I'm at the gym, it's usually squats, deads, good mornings, push press, wonderfull stuff like that. ;)

evolution, you sound like one of the "strongmen" I tell you this, flipping those tires...OMG you got to be in shape.. not for me... you go big guy :)

Unfortanately my height prevents me from doing a lot of the strongmen comps. I am, however, shooting to enter one in 07'. It's pretty hard at first but it gets easier as acclumate to the type of training.

evo...it doesnt get easier you get tougher

I work out at home. All's i need is some kettlebells and a chin up bar. Most of the stuff in a gym is totally crap, if I were to use anything it would just be a power rack and thats it. Also, gym's make me wanna PUKE! I love how decked out in everything people get before going there, they go all these fancy shoes, shorts and shirts. Come one people, why spend 40$ on a shirt you're just gonna sweat in (if you do sweat at all there). Most gyms I've been to don't have room for the real deal exercises like hang cleans, snatches, and deadlifts. They are more concerned with ramming leg presses and ab curl nautilus machine in every corner to appease the fat old ladies that go there.

now that I got that out of me Im gonna try going to bed

i like working out at home. it allows me to do it whenever i can manage the time 12pm anyone. plus i can do it in my shorts or not and no one is there to laugh or gawk so its all good. only prob is no one to spot me so maxing out is a bit of a problem. but there are ways to work around it. so in short i'm for at home!

My building has an exercise room and since no one else uses it it's pretty well like having my own, not always the best equipment but no waiting and not hard to take the elevator downstairs. I also get finished alot faster, have to convince somebody to come with me though or use machines if I want to max out.

I used to go to the gym but was very hard to get motivated when its like minus 20 and you have to bundle up to go there and then change out of the arctic gear and try and stuff it into a locker then shower and go back out into the deepfreeze.

Gym all the way!!!!

at home you have no1 to spot you, or help you out if your in trouble.
in the gym you can push to your limits cos there is always some1 to look out for you.
Ppl say That its cheaper to buy your own stuff... But I pay £430 a year for the use of all the machines, a pool, free assisstance and advice, 5 diff types of CV machine, Punch bag, Climbing wall and I'm meeting new ppl all the time so it quite social, the gym also aranges bowling, paintball, golf and cool stuff thats dirt cheap.

The only 2 down sides I think are having to dirve (only 5mins) and having opning hrs of 6am-11pm, but I think its worth it.

I have lerned more stuff from ppl in the gym than any book.

And I met my Girlfriend ing the gym, so thats a plus to.

Sorry I forgot...

My advice to Dave would be to go to all the Gym in your area and look round TWICE!!! once at peak time and once off peak so you can see how busy it gets and how quiet. maybe ask for a free trial, or ask if you can join for a month to get your techniques right b4 training on ur own.

Things to consider about joining.
Age group of ppl
how busy it gets
when will you train
how far away
quality of equipment
amount of staff around that could help
Extras i.e. punch bags, pool, climbing walls, fundays...
ask some of the other members what they think
read the suggestion board if they have one.

All the while you are looking at gyms you should do lots of reserch into home equipment. There are offen deals on things so wait a month or so before jumping in and buying the 1st thing you see.

let us know what you deside

I am a gym person. At home I have the dog, the kids, the phone, tv, etc....too many distractions. The gym is time for ME - it is the only thing I do for myself. I also feel that I work harder at the gym (keepin' up with the Jones' kind of thing ;) ).

I think wherever you will actually work out is the best place for you. Maybe your local gym has a trial membership where you don't have to commit for a long period of time, but see if you will actually go and use the facility. If you find that you are not going, or do not enjoy going, maybe while you are there you can check out different equipment to see what types of things you would want in your home gym.

I do a combination of weight room and classes - keeps me from getting bored :)

Good luck
