Post Pregnancy- weight loss

Hello everyone,

I had a baby girl :) 3 months ago and just joined gym. I am 26yrs old and 5'9.

Year and a half ago I was about 150lbs (was working out and a lot of it was muscles) and then I quit smoking and gained instantly 15lbs. Within 2 months of that I stayed pregnant and my highest pregnancy weight was 205lbs.

I had a very painful c-section and was not able to do much in first 8 weeks post pregnancy. Now, I am ready and my weight (175lbs) is totally scary. My long term goal is 140lbs.

I changed my nutrition, I am eating more vegetables, fruits, meats, whole wheat bread, crackers and cutting down on my worst enemy- sweets.

My body type is spoon type (lot of junk packed on my hips, thighs and behind) and I am wondering about my exercise routine.

How many times a week?
Do cardio in the morning- meaning burning more fat?
Do whole body exercises at once instead of spliting in 2 days?

I am just afraid of building muscled instead of losing weight and toning! I was told that doing cardio faster but longer and lifting less weight but more repeats will help me acheve my goals. Sorry if sounding totally confused.

I am not expecting miracle within a month but any advice would be great.

Any routine suggestions is greatly appreaciated. Thanks.

I would start out with working out just 3 times a week if you're relatively new to working out. Have you worked out at all this past year?

Some people like doing cardio in the morning, some don't. I've always done my cardio in the morning just to get it out of the way. If it works for you, go for it.

I like to split my weight training. If I try to do full body workouts I inevitably feel bored or exhausted by the last few body parts and don't put my full effort into them. This is just based on my experience though.

Good luck!

I agree with Teresa....you also want to make sure you do the probably abdominal exercises to reverse the damage of a c-section. You'll need to learn to activate the lower abs, focusing on pilates, planks etc to rebuild the abs.

Hi !

I also have children 2 boys they are 4 and 2.

My suggestion to you is number one- be active

Just consider the activity level of each day and how it affects your mood . You feel more inclined to "be good" when you have had some sort of physical activity ya know? During the first 3 months , your body hasn't gotten rid of all the extra weight put on from the pregnancy yet. It literally took me about a year to get back to my pre-preg. shape and that was with very minimal exercise like calisthenics and stuff.

If you start out with fast walking (like 4mph) and get used to that as your cardio about 3 to 5 times a week. Then you'll know what you can do next like walking with an incline or jogging.

You can always do swimming ! and you will see that you will still lose alot of weight anyway from the pregnancy. they say 9 months to put it on and 9 months to take it off which really happens to be true in most aspects.

Congratulations!!! :)

Whatever you do, don't crash diet or stop eating for any reason. The best thing for you and your family and little one is to be healthy and happy. :)

Take care!

ALot of it is about consistency and persistancy. I have 2 kids as well and I was packing quite a load until I got my health figured out with my doctor and really got serious. You can do it.

Thank you all for your response.

I am in gym 6 days a week now. Doing cardio every day and doing weights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Taking it easy, dont want to over work myself.

My gym has many classes already included in membership, like yoga, pilates, kick boxing, absolute abs, aerobics, spinning.... and I am definitely planning to try some and see which one is perfect for me.

Its tough to stay away from sweets but I am trying.

Thanks again.

Just wanted to add... be careful with ab work. Someone mentioned it above. Don't over do it. C-sections are something you should be careful of. Just check in with your doc and get his/her okay.

Classes are a great way to jump start your fitness. Give each one a few tries before you count it out (unless you REALLY hate it). I teach step and tell my students to come back at least three times before they give up.

Sweets are hard for me too. It's easier if you just keep them out of the house in my opinion. Otherwise I obsess over it all day until I finally pig out :)
