Post-Hysterectomy Weight Loss

I am 36 years old, and have never had trouble losing weight before. I have had four children, and I've always been able to get the pregnancy weight off relatively easily by dieting. However, with my last child, I ended up needing an emergency hysterectomy. After he was born, I got down to within 12 pounds of my prepregnancy weight, but ended up gaining some of it back in the past six months. I have completely cut refined sugar out of my diet, added protein in at every meal, and faithfully count my calories using the MyPlate app. I am not eating more than 1200 cal per day. I'm also avoiding white flour completely, and eating very little wheat.

I had been pretty sedentary for someone with 4 kids, due to arthritis and an injury, but I have started doing a bit of Pilates and cardio (20-30 min a day) most days.

I have been doing all of this since New Years. I am basically the same weight at which I hovered for months before the holidays while bring sedentary and eating whatever I wanted. I have cut out so much and am trying so hard, but I feel like I'm getting nowhere. Any advice?

do you weigh your food on a scale? Do your foods have a lot of salt in them? Do you eat a a lot of carbs? What is your Height/Weight?

Hi. Thanks for responding!

When the calories are listed by weight, I do weigh them on a scale. If by volume, I get out the cup measures.

I'm 4'11" and weigh 137.

Oh - and I guess for the carbs / salt question - I haven't tracked sodium, but I don't add salt to my food generally. For carbs, I stick to primarily complex carbs like vegetables, fruit, and sweet potatoes. Like I said - no refined sugar, no white flour, and no food that registers more than 9g of sugar per serving, even if it is natural.

If you are eating such low calories AND you´re active you may give it a couple more weeks but if the scale doesn´t go down you might want to see your doctor because that wouldn´t be normal. Maybe keep a food diary in the meantime so you can show them what you´ve been doing.
Hope your body just needed a bit longer to catch on to what you´re doing, good luck on your journey!

Hi Nat. & welcome to the forum. I agree with LaMa. Give it a couple more weeks & then see someone if your weight doesn't start dropping. Measure yourself as well as that can be a better guide. Are your clothes a little looser? I don't lose weight on 1200 cals a day & had to up mine a little bit. I had to have a hysterectomy at 42 & gained weight as well. I know I was nowhere near as active afterwards. Your metabolism has most probably slowed down. Doing some strength training, even with just light weights at home, would help get that going. I think, with a little bit more time, if you continue doing what you're doing the weight will start to come off. Your diet sounds very healthy. Cheers, Cate.

How can one meal make such a difference? Through a series of circumstances yesterday, I had only a meatball and a 1/4 cup of corn all day when the super bowl started (about 250 calories). I wasn't starving, but I figured I had wiggle room to eat a bit more than usual, so I ate two pork tacos and some salad with -here's the catch- a slice of cake. I woke up this morning having gained 2 of my hard-earned pounds back in one night! What? From one meal?

Hi Cate. Thanks for responding.

You said: "Measure yourself as well as that can be a better guide. Are your clothes a little looser?" I did drop a pants size before losing a pound.

"I don't lose weight on 1200 cals a day & had to up mine a little bit." Do you mean you lose more weight on more than 1200 calories? How does that work?

I don't understand the science of it. I just know when I was exercising quite a bit & only eating 1200 calories I was not losing. When I bumped it up to 1400 I lost again. Maybe it's a switching it up & down thing to fool your body. Your 2 pounds overnight will just be water. With a clean eating day with very few carbs it should go as fast as it came.

Now, I'm not a doctor...nor am I woman...so I am in no way, shape or form qualified to discuss these matters, BUT...HAHAHA...wouldn't it make sense that your hormones might be out of whack after your hysterectomy? If so, that could be partially to blame for you not losing weight as quickly as normal.

Other than that, I would try to not focus on how much weight you're losing. Instead, focus on the fact that you're bettering yourself. Doing pilates and cardio routinely is definitely good for your body. And, pair that with how well you've been sticking to a careful diet? That all sounds great to me!!!
