Post Holidays...

Yesterday was a beautiful Christmas day. Everything went really well. The food, the family, the gift exchange and for our family, celebrating the reason for the season.

However, did anyone else out there other than me, wake up feeling absolutely gross this morning. I don't deprive myself on the holidays of sweets and rich food but I also don't eat mass quantities. But it never fails, I wake up the next day and feel like I've been hit by a truck. I'm tired, lethargic, head hurts and so on. (And no, there was no alcohol.) I believe it must be a sugar/fat hangover and you would think I've learned my lesson by now.

What my body is telling me to do is clean it! Maybe a one week fast or something like that but I know how difficult that is to maintain.

Is anyone else feeling this day after effect?

I think a fast would be a huge mistake and leave you feeling worse in the long run - just get bac on the proverbial horse today and keep going forward...

Drink water, eat healthily, and get out and go for a walk...

I woke up thinking I just needed one more day off. One more day to sleep, to relax. I love my family but running to and fro from house to house can be draining. I didn't over do it with food but I did feel like crap this morning. I had a gorgeous migraine on Sunday that stretched into the next day...

I just plan on drinking a lot of water today, still getting in my exercise, a nice long shower when I get home and early to bed.

I think we all require some recovery time from the holidays.

What mal said - just get back on track. I had a couple days like that on vacation, and eating more protein and drinking more water both helped tremendously.

After Christmas....

OK.. Last week I work my butt off to get to 174.5, and did it. Didn't eat a thing that had fat :)

Well Up comes Christmas which fell on a Tuesday, but celebrated from Sat-Tues.. DOH!! Sucks because I was bact at 178 this morning. I didn't even eat that much! I don't get how I ate 4lbs worth of food :(

UGH!! How much have you all gained over the weekend? Back to running tonight! Hopefully this weight is as easily shed as that weekend pound I normally get.

read arouond the forum there are multiple threads on this subject

It's a scale fluctuation... doesnt mean you gained fat just means the scale changed it's gonna do that from time to time.. depending on sodim content of food or a bunch of different things.

Step away from the scale and rely on measurements, how your clothes are fitting and what you're seeing in the mirror.. not the scale

Likley not food at all....

For me sodium is a biggie.
I would scare the crap out of my wife every monday morning. I hop on the scale and she thinks the world is over because it jumped over the weekend.

I always give myself a "free day" on the weekends where I will eat in restaurants and have a beer or 2. This always leads to a substantial but very short term weight gain on the scale monday morning. Then by friday not only were the gained pounds gone, but a couple more thrown in for good measure. This year was no different. Friday night was the big annual dinner, and whereas I didnt gorge, I did have some beer and wine and ate yummy "bad for me" foods. Gained 6 pounds apparently.....

However, now it is thursday and those 6 pounds are long gone and happy to say they took 3 more with them. Did I REALLY lose 9 pounds in less than a week? No, not even close. For me I would say it is water retention from more sodium and alcohol than normal, but it is aways temporary. Once I get back to my regular program it is all good again.

I hope this is the case for you too. However, in the big picture, 4 pounds is really just a small number in the overall picture and we should never beat ourselves up for having a good time ... sometimes.... Once you are back on track those 4 pounds will be nothing.....

That was very well said sirant, that is exactly what happens to me. Only I'm 5'2" so 4 pounds may actually include a little bit of fat along with the water. I usually fluctuate around 2 to 3 lbs on the weekend and always get back down by Wed. The key to maintaining (and losing for those lucky enough to be doing so) is to be sure to be "good" (eat less calories than maintenance) after a few days of overeating to compensate for the extra calories you had on your little binge. It all works out in the end so you can maintain a weight you're happy with and still get to chow down sometimes..as long as you're prepared to chill on the food for a few days thereafter. :cuss:

I think it is important to realize we are not machines and taking a break from our routines is perfectly normal. How boring life would be otherwise. Never deviating from your diet is like never taking holidays at work. (wouldn't the boss love that :)) Sure, that week in the sun means things pile up on your desk back in the office, but would you give up that week on the beach simply to avoid the backlog? Just means a little hard work when you get back all tanned and relaxed... As Blanchita so wisely pointed out, getting back on track could be as easy as cutting back on the calories a little after the indulgence or doing a few extra laps to make up for it.

Pity those poor people who think a strict diet is an everyday thing. Health is of course important, but so is living a little. Lord knows I am not taking this weight loss journey just to diet and deprive myself everyday for the rest of my life. :)

(Plus I LOVED scaring my poor little wife with those monday morning weigh ins.... (Look honey!! I gained 10 pounds!!!) though now she has figured it out...)

So what you gained 3 lbs... Why start a diet - you've been told this before - start a lifestyle change... and make your favorites work within your day... Deprivation of anything as has been said a million times around here - doesn't work....

Create a plan you can work with...

I didnt over do it, but I know I ate more than I should have.

For me, I know what I miss and need to get back is my exercise routine. Even when eating on track, I feel like something is out of whack, and know its the exercise my body is missing. I worked so hard to make it a routine and now my body misses it.

I woke up yesterday stressed with all that is going on in life and knew what I had to do . . . and I did hop on that Nordik Trak and knock out 35 minutes and a good sweat. It did indeed make me feel better!

That was the yummiest pound I ever gained. LOL! Started back with tracking on Fitday today, and I've got my exercise ready to go as soon as I'm done with work!! Gonna kick some butt, and I'm starting BEFORE New Year's!

diet to me means changing the way i eat.....im back to eating the goodies beacuse of the holidays so when its over im going to stop all that and eat healty and exercise so i tone up and not get flabby....thats what i think of diets is just changing the way you eat......some people think diet means starving yourself. but thats not me.

It's all about lifestyle, right? If you make bad food choices once in a while, they're outweighed (no pun intended) by the far greater number of good choices.

I think holidays are special times and should be enjoyed without worrying about 3 - 4 pounds. As you get back into your regular healthy habits they'll come back off, and as someone else said they'll probably take a couple of friends with them.

I read somewhere that falling "off the wagon" to a certain extent 1 - 2 times a week actually helps in the long term. It keeps your body from thinking theres a famine and keeps you out of "starvation" mode, where your body just hangs on to every ounce of fat it can.

Whether that's true or not, you gotta live a little.

I hit it hard, I drank too much wine, I ate more than a dozen traditional Italian cookies and canoli, I ate creamy clam chowder and I loved every minute of it. Do I feel bad, heck no, what's the point of living healthy most of the time if you can't live it up once in while.

i had tons of cookies also..mostly chocolate chip dipped in chocolate and sugar cookies just for 2 cookies its almost 200 calories so i can imagine how much weight ive put on!!

I dunno, the flip side of it is that there's a reason someone is 50 to 100 pounds overweight and its because they generally eat too much for their metabolism rate. I do believe some people have very slow metabolisms, but the unfortunate reality is that those people can't handle overeating to that extent on different holidays and what not, unless they dont mind the health and vanity impact of being significantly overweight.

It also depends on what you see as "going overboard". I gorged on a 1/4 of a flan over the course of an afternoon plus a bunch of Christmas cookies, but later I didn't eat dinner cuz I was stuffed. Someone else may put away the whole entire thing, plus eat a huge plate of dinner and eat the cookies too. That's cool, only we also have to live with the consequences of our decisions (as annoying as this whole post sounds, I'm sorry!). Sometimes the consequences just aren't worth it, such as a shorter lifespan or the hard work it entails to carry around extra weight. Its a hard life to carry around extra pounds, I walked at about half my normal speed when I was just 30 pounds heavier. It was exhausting hauling around that weight.

I guess my view is that there is no need to be 100% strict all the time, but there's a happy medium there too and if you cross the line then you get to deal with the not so great consequences.

Morning,

I gave myself permission to enjoy the holiday Chinese buffet, but when I came home, I made sure to do my beloved 2.4 mile circle walk (yes! I've recovered enough that I am now mobile again!).

I agree with the other posters - every now and then, life is worth living. :)

Enjoy,

Barbara
