Please help

I am hoping someone can help. I started my diet in August 2008. My starting weight was at least 369. I now weigh 285. I have done this by eating about 2200 calories per day. I am not overly focused on the types of food I eat. I eat the 2200 reasonable calories. I have cereal for breakfast, turkey sandwich for lunch, and usually frozen dinner (Michelena’s, Lean Cuisine). I also will have smaller snacks in between meals like Fiber One bars and 100 calorie snacks. I do not think I eat “junk food”. I am hoping to get to about 220. I have done this without exercising. Recently I have trying to use the treadmill for about 30 minutes every other morning. I do not seem to be losing any more weight. I have been about the same weight for about 2 months now. I have a desk job, so I am not extremely active. Since I just turned 30, I am worried it is getting harder to reverse the damage I have caused over the years. I am still very focused on the diet, but am starting to get discouraged. What do you think I should do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am discouraged because I do not seem to be losing weight. I have been at the same weight for about 2 months now. I am worried that this is it. I need to modify my program to contine to lose, but I don't know what to do. I appreciate your kind words about my progress. I am sorry I wasn't clear on my earlier post.

OK, here is my two cents. I'm far from being an expert but i'm going to try and help. I'm sometimes all over the place so forgive me.

Also, have you read the sticky threads located at the top of each section? These contain a ton of info. Probably will answer a lot of your questions.

Looks like you are eating A LOT of packaged meals and processed foods. Where are you fruits and veggies? How accurate is your "about" 2200 calories a day? Do you know what your BMR is? If you dont know this info is in the sticky threads.

It's great that you are trying to use the tread mill each morning. How many times a week do you use it? I see you have a desk job, do you get breaks during the day?

I think it could be time to really up the exercise. It could help you break this plateau.

Here are some more thoughts. As far as worrying about reversing the damages now that you are 35, dont let that bother you. the past is the past and really focus on the future of getting healthy. I started when i was 35 and people have started later than me. Read as much as possible to really understand what it takes to lose weight. Knowledge is power.

This is one of the forks in the road where you can go left and go back to your old habits or go right and continue down the path to a healthy new life. You need to stay focused and push through this. You have lost 85 lbs and a lot of people would love to have lost that. You came to a great place for motivation and support. KEEP IT UP!!!

Matt

PS stick around and keep us posted.

Matt-Thanks for the advice. I will try to cut out the processed foods. I have such to them as they were convenient. When I say 2200 calories, I never exceed that amount. Some days I may even be under that. I love eating apples and often eat salads. Honestly, I do not eat much fruit, although I like it. There may be one day per week where I will go out and eat, and stay within reason. I excercise about 30 minutes every other day. Honestly, I have been missing more days than I should lately. I honestly do not like to excescise (but who realy does if they have a choice). I think I really need to excercise more. I will do a little more research as to what excercise will be right for me. I am 6'4 and 285. I feel cardio may be better suited for me. Any thoughts as to what excercise program? I also have a weight set I could use, and was thinking of buying an excercise bike. I also have 2 15 minute breaks at work. I also have a 30 minute lunch. Thanks-Steve

I would echo what Matt said.

I know that the processed foods are "easier" in some ways, but in the long run, I do believe they contribute to keeping the weight on. I lost weight faster and felt better when I started cutting out the packaged and processed crap and started eating real foods. An apple or banana instead of a 100 calorie pack. That kind of thing.

But I would DEFINITELY encourage adding in exercise. There are so many good reasons to add exercise into your life, other than losing weight. I know it's tough right now, and you don't have to like it necessarily. There are days that I don't like it - I just treat it like a part of life - like paying bills or getting up in the morning and going to work. It just is. :)

Hey Steve,
How are things going?

It appears that you may need to get a little more consistant with your exercise. That certainly would help. It's always best to do a combination of cardio and weights. The weights will help you retain muscle as you try to lose fat.

My thoughts on an exercise program is to do whatever works for you. Walking outside, light jogging, elliptical, bike or whatever is going to keep you going. I know you don't like it and neither did I but know i love it. It's such a stess reliever. I just feel better walking out of the gym and when i used to walk outside. It just takes me away from the busy day (and we all have them). They say 21 days makes a habit. Thats only 3 weeks. Focus on consistanly getting in you exercise for just 3 weeks and see what happens.

Also, do you weigh and measure your food? Very, very important. You can get a true count on your calories. The problem with many people is they underestimate them. It may seem to be a pain but you get used to it.

Hope this stuff helps. KEEP IT UP!!!!
