playing sports for weight loss

I find that I have to drag myself into the gym and on to a treadmill/elliptical/stationary bike, then almost as soon as I start, I find some excuse in my mind to stop.

Sports on the other hand, e.g. full court basketball, hockey, softball, etc., I can play for hours on end and hate when it's finally over. I do a decent job in finding these activities that I can do, but on the days when there's no sport to play, I'm finding that I don't get exercise.

Any tips on finding pleasure in going to the gym itself?

I guess your either a gym kinda person or your not. I know I love to go to the gym b/c I love to jog and thats the only place I can, really.....but theres nothing wrong with not being a gym person! Your totally right, sports counts as exercise just as much as the tredmill does...so if you enjoy it...go for it!

I was never a gym person either. I was (and still am) a huge sports person as well.

It was all about modivation and a mixture for me. Mons/Weds/Sat i do the gym with Intensity bike cardio mixed inbetween sets and tues/thurs i play raquetball or hoops.

I probably avergae a total of 4.5 days a week of the above physical exercise and combined with eating healthier i have seen amazing results.

If you are a sports person (like me) you may be a music person (like me), i cannot goto the gym without and ipod (i could probably lift without it but there is no chance of me doing cardio w/out tunes...) I have about a 130 song playlist that keeps growing and doesnt get old. Alot of the songs on my playlist remind me of sports accomplishments i have made, or sporting events i have attended and even some of my favorite sports movies. I find it very motivating and am able to "lose myself" in it... Yeah... I have alot of eminem as well. Give it a try if you havtn!

Ive found biking to be a really good way to stay entertained rather than the treadmill. mind you theres a lot of trails here to go riding on

You can lose the weight while playing games such as cricket , Volley ball, football and so on . Because it burn lot of calories . That why some people go to the club and play this types of game to lose the weight .

I've played sports up to a national level, Ultimate frisbee being the most....intense if you will. I can say this, my weight and body fat levels hardly ever changed much during a season. Granted I was in decent enough shape to begin with, but once you reach a certain level, you just don't change. Sports, much like cardio, can only take you so far. There is a reason all atheletes who are serious about their sport.......hit the gym and train.... It's the gym that gets atheletes to their goals.

When I added weight training to my routine, the results over just a few months were astounding. I dropped more bodyfat in 2 months weight training than I did 1 year running daily. Looked much bigger, was faster and stronger, etc etc..

So for me, it's easy, the motivation to hit the gym is that I know doing it makes me better overall than anything playing sports can possibly do. And what keeps me motivated is seeing the weight I can lift increase week after week, or seeing my muscles look bigger in the mirror week after week. This is something you really cannot get from sports...
