Pistachio Principle and other foods with principles?

I just read about the pistachio principle (basically how eating in shell pistachios slows down your eating because you have to work at it and eat them one at a time.) Are there other foods with similar principles like the leftover shells tell you "whoa you at a lot of *insert food here*" time to stop?

I think the pistachio thing might work for me but I can't just eat pistachios :)

Which part sounds silly to you? If it takes you longer to eat pistachios because you have to de-shell them one by one as opposed to eating handfuls of nuts, won't that decrease your calorie intake?

I suppose for some it could work. The problem is, at least in my experience working with overweight/obese people.... they're going to eat excess calories regardless of the little tricks you play until you educate them and motivate them to want to make a change in their life.

In many cases, that's not going to happen until they're ready.

Can't you just apply that rule to everything you prepare yourself. so make all meals from scratch. Grow your own veges, have your own chickens. That sort of thing. Then you will have to actually go and pick the food, wash it, prepare it etc. and then eat it.

And be careful with over eating pistachios. They are healthy, but calorie wise don't over do it.

Oh and Jack, sorry if I came across condescendingly there. That was not my intent. I post out loud sometimes, lol. I meant no disrespect.

The 'principle' is silly relative to my experience with clients but that doesn't mean it will be silly to you or others who try it.

read the book Mindless Eating by Brian something or other - He did a ton of experiments in his food lab at cornell university where people absolutely ate more when they didn't see the remains of what they were eating (they did the experiment with chicken wings)

it's really just being aware of what you're eating

It does make sense, if you can tell visually and by the way your stomach feels how much you've eaten, it should give you a "maybe you've had enough" sign.

Know that healthy doesn't equal calorie-free

Studies show that individuals often eat more calories of healthier foods, such as olive oil compared to butter, or Subway sandwiches versus McDonald's because they believe that they are better for them.

this was lifted right out of the book Mindless Eating... the author of that book conducted that study and calorie for calorie the people they interviews, consumed more at Subway than at McDonalds -even with the subway nutrition info printed clearly on all their napkins...
