Pilates

Hey,

My friend recently suggested going to a Pilates class so I agreed to go along with her. The first one is tonight.

I have no real idea what Pilates involves, I am aware that it is supposed to strengthen core muscles, and isn't a weight loss exercise.

I'm still quite overweight and feel that it's probably going to be fruitless going to this class but I think I'll go anyway.

Basically I'm a bit scared because I can see myself being the only fat girl in a room filled with flexible bendy girls and looking like an idiot. I was wondering if anyone can give me the low-down on what a typical pilates class consists of.

I'm really hoping there's no sit ups because I can't for the life of me do them, but I imagne there probably will be.

This is going to be so embarrassing so I want to be as well prepared as I can.

Thankyou.

Well.. it depends on what you mean fruitless is.

Steve is the expert here, but for long term health, especially avoiding really suffering from the lower back pain everyone eventually gets, maintaining a good posture and such, getting a strong set of core muscles is a really good idea.

As far as I remember there was even some research sort of pointing in the direction of good core muscles being able to step in and back up the spine when it is being compressed hard and such so... good core muscles are never bad!

that is what pilates is, google is your friend :) pilates is, as far as I know, mostly either bodyweight exercises akin to sit ups, push/pull stuff and... what not, and a lot of static holds like the plank, only made to look all yoga-licious.
