Pickin' & choosin' & losin'

Last Fall when I decided I wanted to lose the weight I had gained over the last few years I bought a few diet books looking for the 'perfect' method.

I couldn't find just one that I was willing to follow 100% but I did pick & choose a few things that seem to help a lot.
I was hoping some of you would have some tips to share too!

These are some of what has worked for me-

from You on a Diet - eating the same thing for breakfast every day. I made up a mix of whole grains, Raisins & Nuts from the health food store. I mix it with a tablespoon of pysllium fiber & a little sweetner. I pour hot water over it & let it soak while I have my morning tea. It keeps me full until lunch.

from The Atkins Diet - Lowered my carbs. Don't eat wheat at all & the other whole grains I eat I keep to a lower percentage of my diet.

Just two examples but they have really worked for me. What works for you?

what's worked for me is just paying attention...

I don't have perfect days - not even close but I record everything I eat every single day and it helps...

Weighing and measuring in addition to the above also made a difference. .I've said this before here, but I was never a fast food, fried food, or regular junk food eater... I ate relatively healthily and never could figure out why I couldn't lose weight -until I started really exercising portion control...

From Scarsdale I took some of the menu ideas for breakfasts and lunches, like eating grapefruit with breakfast, and eating zucchini and tomatos with cold cuts at lunch (yum.). I also love Chicken Herman from the Scarsdale book. It is VERY EASY to make and delicious:

Baked Chicken Breasts Herman
Thursday Dinner - Gourmet

BAKED CHICKEN BREASTS HERMAN
2 boned chicken breasts (about 1 1/2 pounds)
1/2 tsp. celery salt
1/2 tsp. mixed herbs
1 cup bouillon
3 tbs. dry white wine
1/2 tsp. minced onion
1/2 tsp. minced parsley
Paprika
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Remove all skin and visible fat from chicken breasts; cut lengthwise into halves.
Rub chicken all over with mixture of the celery salt and mixed herbs.
Place in baking pan. Combine bouillon, wine, onion, parsley, and generous dash of
paprika, stir well, and pour over chicken.
Cover pan with foil and bake 25 minutes.
Remove foil, brush chicken with liquid in pan, and bake uncovered 15 minutes longer
or until chicken is tender to the fork.
Serve with juice. Serves 3 or 4.

I hear that!

That recipe sounds delicious, thanks for sharing, indigoiis.

What works for me...

I eat a 100% regimented diet through the week. I use fitday.com to track the calories from monday to friday. 2000-2200 per day.

breakfast - oatmeal with hot soymilk

lunch - salad with homemade dressing and tuna or BBQ chicken breast

Dinner - healthy stew prepared every sunday and eaten through the week.

Snacks - various fruits, raw veggies and nuts.

Thats it. I am having no problem sticking too it.

On weekends I dont count calories and eat whatever I want, just not in huge portions. This includes ice cream and beer.

On top of that I run 5X a week usually totalling 30-40km.

Thats it. 60 pounds gone so far.

I'm doing my own thing and it seems to be working out for me. I cut out soda completely. Not even on the weekends. If I'm going to drink I have a glass of blush wine and then drink water after that. I cut back the portions I was eating and cut out a lot of carbs. I'm also very cautious about what I put into my body as far as foods go. I don't eat sweets and much and I'm fining new alternatives. My favorite is that instead of using croutons on my salads, I use sliced almonds. I get that crunchiness but in a better option.
