Penguinita's Weight Loss Diary

I completely agree with Luzdafuzz! I've been reading that lots of skin problems are linked to eating too many refined, non-whole grains (many breakfast ceareals, white rice, etc) and not enough veggies.

Since I changed my eating a month ago, my skin has completely changed. I used to get a small breakout about once a week and now I never do! I completely attribute it to whole grains and vegetables!

Also- I like your detailed food diary. It's interesting to see in-depth what other people are doing!

Thanks Rox, I'll be putting in more fresh food in my diet, I really hate having to deal with acne especially since I barely had any during my teenage years >.<!
I'll be keeping my diary as detailed as possible since I am scared of getting a plateau again

Penguinita,

If you add the fresh fruits and veggies to your meals, and take away some
of the processed carbs, you will see a major improvement in your weight
loss results, and your overall health (including skin of course)

...and if you want to make some serious progress, walk 45 minutes per day
until you reach your ideal weight, and do this every day!

...there is nothing, let me say again, nothing more effective for burning off
unwanted body fat than walking on a daily basis!

...especially taking into account that your overall eating habits are really
excellent, you will reach your ideal body weight without any problems!

Thank you for the comment Alex Platups,
Most people have been telling me about the negatives of processed carbs, so much so I'll be cutting it out of my diet gradually to a point that I'll never want any.

You know the walking thing is so true, thank you for posting it. When I started my weight loss I used to walk 30 minutes to 1hr and lost weight much faster than I am now.

ITA that walking is the best! I used to have a group of friends to walk with a few times a week. It was so fun and a good workout!
But we moved away in 2008 and I haven't found a good group of fitness buddies IRL since then.

Your plan for fruits and veg sounds great!
I personally go heavy on the veggies and lighter on the fruit. Spinach and zucchini are my two favorites.

Good luck and have a great weekend!

I'm so picky with veggies but I'm going to force myself to like them, lol I did the same with black coffee. I used to put a ton of sugar and milk now I can drink black coffee and enjoy it.

Penguinita, it is true sometimes it is possible to like someting, like plain black
coffee, but as you know many people love black coffee. When I drank coffee,
I drank it strong, black, and without sugar or any sweetener.

But, with vegetables, to be honest, even after 15 years of 40% of my daily
calories coming from this source, I haven't been able to start liking them.

I eat them because my PRIMARY objective is having a lean, healthy, and
well-toned body, so my SECONDARY steps are proper nutrition and exercise,
and eating vegetables are simply a part of the secondary steps and I do that
because it is necessary that my body gets the macro- and micro-nutrients
that are in fresh vegetables.

It is very important to make this distinction, and not try to force yourself
to like something, if you don't like it. Obviously, you can find some vegetables
that you might even love, but even if you don't still it is simple part of the
process of creating a healthy body filled with energy and vitality.

And, yes, as far as walking creating massive results, it is a fact. The majority
of the 110 pounds of unwanted body fat that I lost many years ago were
burned off using double-cardio (fast walking twice per day). And, I walked
every day until I reached my ideal weight, and only after reaching adjusted
my cardio to three times per week for maintenance.

But, these days I use HIIT (high intensity interval training) for 45minutes,
three times per week. This is the ultimate fat burning exercise, but it took
me a while to get used to doing it for so long. I started with 15 minutes
per session and build my way up, little by little.

Hahaha!
15 years and still don't like them really tickled me.
But I do get what you're saying about viewing the veggies through their benefits. I hate eggplant but I'll eat them because they're rich in nutrients. I also try to think back when I was a child and I'd eat ANYTHING, so I try not to make faces or complain about them now.

I'm glad you mentioned walking before, otherwise I would have stuck to my exercise dvds. Though my DVDs really work you out, I forgot how much stress disappears when I walk. Hopefully one day in the future when my stamina's up there I'll try the High Intensity Interval training.

Thanks for your comments! they've been really insightful and helpful :)

another very effective approach that I used in the past to find the vegetables
and fruits that I really like and want to eat is this: I went inside the food
store right before my next meal, so that I am good and hungry, but my goal
was to buy only the vegetables and fruits that I will want to eat.

and you know, it worked out really well, obvioulsy with fruits it's quite easy,
but with vegetables it is not, and by being hungry and in front of those
veggies made some part of me want certain vegetables and I bought them
and they ended up being okay.

Yes, walking is KING for weight loss, and plus it does something with your
mind, where you start to feel really relaxed and start to get amazing thoughts
about how you can improve all kinds of things in your life, it sorts of really
focuses you on what's important, and then helps you to come up with the
answers to how to effectively reach your goals in those important areas.

The DVD's I'm sure are also an excellent way to work out, and mixing it up
keeps your body from adapting to a routine, so this is something that you
can also use and create some positive effects with it.

As far as HIIT, I am addicted to it, and look forward to it more than anything
else. The weight training is the part that I haven't really learned to like,
even though I have been doing it for 15 years.

Since I use running/fast walking for HIIT, there is something almost spiritual
about it, and if someone told me that I would be doing this kind of high
intensity exercise ten years ago I would think they are crazy.

But now, I can't see my life without it. I have to be honest with you, if you
continue using proper nutrition, and shifting your calories by eating more
food one day and less the next (as you are doing already, from what I read)
and add walking plus those DVDs on a regular basis, you will hit your main
weight loss target in no time at all.

If there is one thing that I learned in all these years of maintaining my weight
having been born with a slow metabolism is this: The basics and fundamentals,
the simplest things are what work the best. Advanced strategies might be
okay to break plateaus, but the simplest things are what will create 95%
of the results.

Okay, Penguinita, good luck to you, and I look forward to the day you reach
your health goal, and then will look forward to hearing about how you
continue to maintaining that result in the long run.

Thanks Alex Platups, you've been so helpful!

JOB HUNTING SUCKS!!!

it blows

end of story

okay, I've applied to 7 jobs so far. That may seem like a little for experienced people, but I just got out of college. I have some experience, nothing out of the ordinary. I graduated from my junior and state university with honors so I'm hoping that shows something, or sets me apart. since I woke up at 7:30ish I've been looking at job listings, and applying all places I feel qualified. so... this has been going on since before I graduated. Today, I was reminded of my mom's comment that I should apply to one of the department stores because of the good hours so I did. Not after 2 hours did I get a call back!!! I've been applying places for almost a month, but I apply here and get a call back?! what?! I'm so happy, and kinda angry if that's possible. Job hunting in this market is hard, but being a liberal I have faith in Obama that his administration will pull us out of this mess. I don't expect him to completely fix things, no, after all too many people deeply hate him for that to happen. For once, I wish that we could get a president that everyone loves but that's as possible as me wining the mega million. Political-ish rant over. Anyway, back to not exercising. So from 9-3 I am calling places I applied and get the call back from the department store. I got an interview for tomorrow, yez!!!! oh.. no, nothing FITS ME. all my clothes are baggy. I have like 4 outfits that fit me ok, a little loose. but ok. I am not loaded, my parents aren't either. I know I can ask my mom for money for new clothes, as a loan but I can't be a burden. I won't let myself be a burden. It took me almost an hourrr!!!! to find a suitable outfit for the interview. I never take more than 30 minutes to get ready anywhere- 15min shower, 5 min clothes, 10 minutes hair and I'm out!. My face was soooo much better today, in the morning anyway. Clearing up, but after I showered 20 minutes ago I noticed a juiced up zit that came out of no where. UGHHH! this blows. Next week, sometime I'll have to drop my doctor and see wtf is going on with my face. So because of my acne I'll have to wear makeup, and I hate wearing makeup. It makes me feel like I'm hiding... I know that sounds stupid, but I feel guilty when wearing it. I hope my interview goes well, I can't wait to get to Boston this weekend. Oh, and I haven't heard back from my back up school for Grad school. I need to get in somewhere, I don't want to wait another year to start the career I want to get into. I got wait listed at Columbia university and NYU and I don't want to get wait listed again. I hate waiting, it freaks me out.

Glad to rant, sorta. Made me feel better. So no exercise, just my ear glued to a phone, calling places. Though I am peeved today. It was an overall good day. I've hit rock bottom before and this isn't even an amoeba of having a bad day. Life is good, its going to get better.

Your lucky you got a call back, i haven't got ANYTHING yet. Tomorrow I go to the placement agency and hope I can put my resume in some where that I can GET a job. How much of a pain in the ass. All the jobs that pay me minimum wage wont let me have enough money to LIVE and they are always the ones that all me back. Sure minimum wage is better than nothing but, really? Not enough money to pay rent, eat, and put gas in my car?! I'm glad you finally got an interview! Way to go! I hope you get the job!

What are you going to grad school for NYU is EXPENSIVE!!!

Aw, I hope your interview goes well. You are right, job searching does suck! You rant on, this is your diary, and if it helps get out that aggression, then it is helping. I've learned you should never let things build up, unless you just want to go off like a crazy person. Hey, I would love for my clothes to be baggy right now! I see your point for wanting to dress decent for your interview though. Put on a sincere smile and I am sure you'll do well.

You just rant away. We're here for you and cheering you on through the hard parts.

You sound frustrated, but keeping a positive general attitude, which is great. And how wonderful that you don't take out your frustration by eating!

Congrats on the interview. Does anyone near you sew and have a machine? They could take in some of your clothes so they fit better. If you lived near me, I'd do it for you!

As for the acne- I know that stress can be a big factor in that. It's not all down to diet. And it sound slike you're under pleanty of stress. so please don't beat yourself up about it.

And please don't feel guilty about wearing makeup. There's lots of stuff in life to feel bad about, but not that!

I'll be thinking of you, with my fingers crossed!

I was actually going to get one of my dresses shortened today, but since I just heard about my interview yesterday I had to cancel. The lady is from my church, she was sweet enough to do this for me so I feel bad that I had to cancel. I actually got the job at the department store!!! It pays 8 dollars an hour so its not a lot, but it's something. My first pay check will mostly go for new work clothes. Yea, stress is definitely a big factor in my acne, I want to go to go my general doctor to ask him questions about it. However, my mother warned me that they'll most likely put me on antibiotics or some hormone that can give me more negatives than positives.
Lol, I like how my face looks when I have makeup on, so clean and flawless. But I'm afraid of getting dependent on it.
Thanks for the support! It paid off! I start sometime next week, they are going to call me again after the background check.

May 25, 2010
8:30- 2 egg whites, 1 egg, 1/4 cup of spinach, 1tsp of ketchup, whole wheat sandwich roll (250)
10:00- 1/2 cup of fat free ice cream (110)
*interview! omg so stressful, 20 ppl in one room trying to get the same job*
4:00- Rice, chicken thigh, 1/4 of black beans (344)
4:30- 1/2 of fat free ice cream (110)
7:00- 8 Pizza hut spicy wings+ 1/2 of the ranch container (450)
Total Caloric Intake: 1264
Water: 7 cups so far, will drink one more now :)
Exercise: Walking up and down the mall in 2 inch heels

Man was that interview insane!!! 20 of us in one room, 2 interviewers. It was like a free for all. I spoke my mind, but not too much. I kept pushing that I graduated with my A.A. and B.A w/ honors, and I think it helped. The girls who also were hired with me are all awesome. I can already see it will be a positive work environment. So happy!!
So I went to Wal-mart with my mom and brother after wards, I bought another pair of slacks that I could wear to work. Something I notice ONLY happens with mom my is that I eat something fattening. ONLY when I am with her do I eat something crazy, at first she wanted me to have 2 slices of the stuffed crust supreme pizza but I was so mad at her for making that choice harder than easier. Instead I ordered the regular chicken wings. Still a lot of calories for one meal, but not so bad. It's so hard to say no to her, when I do she always takes it as an insult. WTF.... sometimes she's supportive on my weight loss and life change, but other times she's the devil with the hot fudge cheese cake. I am going to push myself to jog some tomorrow morning, NO MORE EXCUSES!

Congrads of getting a job!!! Don't fear telling your mom NO when it comes to things you dont want to eat. If she just keeps pushing the issue, look her dead in the eye and say "You think I came this far eating stuffed crust pizza and hot fudge cheese cake?" And if she is still pushing the issue just say, "I think that YOU want (what ever food item shes pushing). You should have that, not me." Cause most of the time when my friends tell me to order something, they want it themselves and want to pick off my plate

I'm so happy for you that you got the job. It sounds like you wowed them!

And I totally agree with SilverMetal's good advice. Does the direct approach sound like something that could work with your mom? It would be so much more helpful if you got support, or even a neutral attitude from your family, rather than sabotage.

I look forward to your next post!

You're looking great!!!!

Ugh I hate job hunting too... I always feel like I'm looking for a new job (am currently actually!!) At least I'll hopefully be studying next semeser!!

Also with your skin- do you have any kind of skincare routine? I mean my skin really cleared up with my change in diet, but I'm religious with my skincare too (I've got a diploma in beauty therapy so have always looked after my skin) My acne was terrible from when I was about 12 and stayed that way for years... when I started looking after my skin it improved immensely- still had a few pimples always but nowhere near as ad as it used to be. Now it's always completely clear!! I have oily skin though so it's going to be something I always have to deal with.
If you've never had a problem though then you will probably find it stems from lack of nutrients in your diet... your last few food diaries looked much better though!!

Hey Luzdafuzz,

Thanks for the lovely comment! :) Job hunting sucks, but luckily I landed a position. Oh it seems we might be in a similar position, I applied to grad school and haven't heard news from my last choice so I'm not sure if I'll be working full time come fall or studying full time.

As for my skin care regime I do have one. I use clean and clear foam wash 2-3 times a day, followed by nutregena toner, followed by clean and clear moisturizer, but I also follow that up with a SPF 30 moisturizer since my skin still feels dry after the first moisturizer. The ironic of all things is that when I was a teenager I'd get maybe one or two zits in a blue moon.
I'm trying to change my food choices, hopefully that'll do it :)

================
SilverMetal- LOL I never thought that she might want that food item that she pushes me to have. It makes so much sense though. I kinda feel weird about telling her no, or refusing anything other than money from her. What i sometimes do is say that I'll eat the pizza or what ever junk she may bring from outside and give it to one of my brothers who would happily eat it. We are both adults, so I do have to start to change the way I approach our relationship. Its hard when I still feel like a 5year old around her :/

================
Rox- Thanks! I was surprised I got the job with my little years of experience. The interviewers kept pushing how crappy the economy is, I also had a visual reminder. I felt so bad, this man was in his late 50's applying for the same position I was. oh, he also was hired and the interviewers said his experience was too good for our position so he was offered something with better pay and benefits so it turned out to be a good day.

As for dealing with my mother, I am trying to see our relationship as more of an adult relationship. Like I said above, I feel like a kid around my mom, so telling her no I don't want something makes me feel bratty and unappreciative.

Boston-Lawrence-Methuen Massachusetts

I've been hoping around these three towns for the past few days. I have family here so I've done A LOT of walking, but also a TON of eating. I've kept a log of what I put in my mouth as well as the movement I do. I decided not to aim for loosing weight calories this weekend but maintain calories. and so far I think I am ok. But I haven't tallied the calories up and done online research on some of the stuff I ate. Yesterday my water intake was very low but on purpose, I didn't want to be traveling while needed to pee all the time.

Everything my family does is centered around food. All the meetings, parties and just casual get together becomes all you can eat buffets!! WTF! I've never been so tempted before. So far I've controlled myself. But I have had more calories that usual. Also there has been a lot of walking, so that's good. I made it a point to wear heels everywhere to make my body work harder when walking, I'm not sure if that works but it sounded like a good idea at the time.

Because I have not had the resources to tally up some meals I won't post my food diary yet. I've written what I ate as well as portion sizes. I'm staying at a relative's house and their computer is an old model with slow internet so I try not to mess with it. I've also finally made time to sit down and check the forum.

Man I hope I don't gain. That'll be my goal for Monday to be the exact weight I was before I left or less, though I know less will be unrealistic.

Hi there!
Congrats on landing a job!
I think spending your weekend just trying to hit maintainance calories is a great idea. Allows you a bit more flexibility, and will probably be a good switch-up for your body, as well!
Oh, and your picture looks fabulous!! Keep up the good work~

Thanks for the lovely comment Hanabi!
Yea, switching from loosing weight calories to maintain really takes the worry out of what I eat. I allowed myself to have fun.

I was going to post my food log for the weekend but it is SOOO MUCH STUFF. OMG I ate a ton and on a happy note I weighed myself this morning and I am 151.6. Ha! I didn't gain anything, so awesome. I think it helped that I was moving constantly. Also a lot of the meals consisted of mostly veggies, fruits and meats... barely anything with flour, other than the graduation cake.

So quick review:

Thursday-Friday hoped around towns and ate a ton, but healthy foods.
Saturday- ate a healthy breakfast and went to a graduation party. Had fruit and some food as well as a pina colada.
Sunday- walked a lot and drank a glass of wine, something I don't normally do.
Monday- ate only 3 meals, all under 400 and walked a ton.
Tuesday- didn't log--- I was so tired! Its a blue moon day, also my mood went really low after finding out I was not accepted for my backup school.

June 2, 2010
8:40- 3/4 cup of kellog's walnut, 1/2 cup of soy milk vanilla, 1 small banana and 1(1/2) cups of grapes
11:00- Coffee w/ 1/4 cup of soy milk and granny smith apple
1:00- 1 cup of watermelon diced, 1 small cinnamon iced coffee black, 1 small banana
3:00- 1 cup of white rice, 4 molleya (gizzard), 4 sweet plantain fried slices
6:00- 1/2 small iced cappuccino (taste kept getting worse so through it out)
9:00- 1/4 cup wine cooler, 1 small packaged flan
Water: 5 cups
Total Caloric Intake: 1449.5
Exercise: ran errands while walking briskly for a little over an hour

I also went to wal-mart and got some fruits and whole grain bread.

I've also decided to set short term goals just to have my schedule be more structured.
So, tomorrow, June 3, 2010 I want to have done ___ by the end of the day:
-Vacuumed house & other cleaning
-cleaned turtle tank
-Organized clothes
-Do check up calls to schools and red cross
-Picked up dry cleaning

Wow! Grapes, bananas, watermelon, apples...you are the Queen of Fruit now! lol Srsly, your food diary for June 2nd looks really varied and healthy!

ITA that it was a super idea to have realistic goals for the weekend. That way you never had to feel like you were "failing". I am SO going to use that idea when I have special events to deal with.

I also agree that whole grains are the way to go. There's so much more fiber, for one thing.
also- I've noticed that you have a bit of white rice on some days. Have you thought about brown rice? I've discovered brown thai rice. My family likes it pretty well and it has a more delicate flavor than normal whole-grain rices. It goes pretty well with some of the African dishes I make. Just an idea to toss around!

I'm glad things are going pretty well for you! It's just a shame about your backup school not working out.... You are sounding good now, though- very energetic and organized!

Thanks Rox! I've tried to get more fresh produce into my diet. At the moment I am eating more fruits than veggies, mainly because of taste. I really need to readjust my habits.

As for the white rice, I've been pestering my mother and grandmother about it. They tried it a month ago and didn't care for it so the household switched back to white rice. It really sucks because I actually like it more than the white rice! We're not a get down together to eat dinner kind of family, but we always eat what my grandmother cooks. To make it healthier I eat in moderation and scoop more beans in and less rice.

Thanks for the comment, I am bummed about not getting in. But after that news I've started researching more graduate schools I could apply to. There is also a slim chance of entering grad school through the wait list at other schools, though I am not holding my breath. I'm trying to think positive

7:00- Oatmeal, raisins and grapes: 210
10:00- Mixed fresh fruit: 70

Water: 6 cups
Total Caloric Intake: 1527
Exercise: light house cleaning for a few minutes, mostly sedentary research... I wonder if lots of reading and analyzing burn extra calories

Today was more sedentary than I hoped. I had bigger meals today and ate late tonight. Even though it was a small fruit cup, I try to limit my eating at night. Tomorrow I'll go to the gym, I have to! I just ended my period so I hate 3-4 weeks before the pain comes back.

I'm going to try the run-walk method. For starters I'll be walking 6 minutes, running for 1 minute and repeating. I've been wanting to run for ever! I never could and want to get myself into it. My boobs are big so that has always been my excuse in regards to not running, but in the biggest looser I've seen women with boobs two-three times my size and able to run.

On ward and forward!!
