Pedometers

I purchased my first pedometer yesterday. What are your thoughts on it? I wore it this morning (walked 1 hour for lunch) and I have 7720 steps already. It seems like that is too many steps. Any movement makes it count a step. Is there a certain place on your body to wear it so that it's not so sensitive? I only paid $13.00 (US$) so I don't expect it to be exact. Your suggestions/thoughts are greatly appreciated :)

so i just bought one over ebay, anyone know a site that can tell you how many steps you should achieve in a day?

Prevention magazine has a couple of articles on walking programs. I think basically, it's about setting goals and walking more steps each day than the day before. A beginner might start with a 10,000 step per day goal.

that's great! I just got a pedometer and I wear it when i walk my dogs. My goal is to walk further each time. Yesterday, we walked 3347 steps. That was equivalent to about 45 minutes. Today was too rainy and windy, so I got on my treadmill instead. I am sooooo looking forward to spring and summer!

Alright, I've been thinking about getting a pedometer for a while now, but I don't know exactly what kind I should get. I've been seeing them priced from $1 to up past $150 - what exactly should I get? I mean, I don't want to cheap out and get the pedometer that's a buck because it'll probably fall to pieces on the first step, but I don't exactly want to spend my life savings on one that'll tell me what my water level is every time my pits start to sweat.

So, if some of you handsome and beautiful people could give me a suggestion on what would be best, then I'd be very greatful. I don't do too much running or jogging, I just walk everywhere.

Walmart

is where I get mine ..I went chep 3.88 and last me aout 6-7 months! I figure that isn't bad.

My all time wishlist pedometer, is the Nike shoe attachment that goes with a Nano iPod - it fits in the bottom of the shoe and wowza - very cool - however, Nike shoes just don't fit my feet well.

The problem with the cheaper & more expensive pedometers is their accuracy, I had one about $10 that after 4-5 months was VERY unreliable.

Currently, I'm using Walking Advantage 360 by Sportline (now you can get it for about $25, I think it was closer to $40 when I bought it).

The accuracy is great, lots of functions, easy to use.

I don't want to troll on your thread. And in full disclosure, I'll fully admit I'm biased because I'm with the company. But I'd recommend the Omron HJ720 USB pedometer that lets you upload your stats to your online profile from and it's 99+% accurate. You can get lifetime online tracking with the purchase of the pedometer and club pack. As you probably know there are all kinds of pedometers out there, but only a few are accurate, the WalkingSpree Omron HJ720 uses an accelerometer like the nike + as the other poster mentioned. Although just getting active overall regardless of the type of pedometer is a win win situation no matter what:)

I have the Sportline 360 & love it!

I try to wear it daily from the moment I wake until I put on the Pjs. Sometimes I am amazed at how much one person can walk without realizing it. There have been days where I have been tired & don't understand why....check the pedometer & WHOA "I took THAT many steps today?!?"

Now that I am focusing more on getting healthy & fit I want to one day actually say I have done the recommended 10, 000 steps... something I have yet to do...BUT WILL!

Good luck with which ever you end up with. They can be a lot of fun & great at motivating you to get a few more extra moves into the day.

Where can I pick it up? At an EMS or something like that?

I got mine at a sports store near my house, if you do a search online for one, it will bring up places to buy one :)

Good luck and let us know which one you got and how you like it :)

I've been using a Garmin Forerunner 201, which uses GPS to track distance. It doesn't track steps or anything like that, but it's very accurate. It also keeps a really good log of distances, calories and various activities, and it can be exported to google earth so you can see where you walked! The main downside is that it isn't cheap.

I also have an Oregon Scientific pedometer which tracks distance, steps etc. It's fairly accurate, and quite small. I have used cheaper pedometers and never been very pleased with them.

Also, I have another pedometer which is just a dial with a pointer on it. No batteries needed, and all it does is tell you distance. It's amazingly accurate, but has no other functions than distance.

Generally when making that sort of purchase, I buy the item a few steps down from the very top of the line model. Don't bother with a super cheap one, it will just be annoying.

I think that pedometers are GREAT weightloss gadgets - funny enough, I recommended to someone today (who is paying a hypnotist to help him lose weight!) that they start wearing one. I think that its especially good for someone who is just starting to address their fitness. Maintaining weightloss long term is largely about adopting a more active lifestyle, and walking more should be part of it. Wearing a pedometer helps you monitor your progress, keep a check on it - even set new goals.

What type? I have bought two, both £2.99 from Boots chemists. WARNING: I lost one, the husky ate the other.... Be careful how you clip them on.

i have one

I got one of those for christmas from my parents. I've been wearing it. I am suprised on how many steps one can take in the day without trying to make it a certain number. Any of you gonna set # of steps/day goal for yourself? I want to but not sure of what # I should aim for.

Hi Jenny,
I've read in several places that you should aim for 10K steps a day.

I know that every bit of moving is a *GOOD* thing, however, I often wonder if people who are doing their grocery shopping, going to the bank, stopping for gas, picking up the kids, etc, are counting all those steps as exercise?

The trouble with those steps, at least for me, is that I know my heart rate doesn't get high enough simply by parking at the far end of Trader Joe's parking lot.

So if my heart rate isn't up for a sustained period of time, I just don't count it as my exercise.

It is interesting to see how many steps it takes doing laundry and cleaning the house though :)

pedometer

Mine is a Life Brand (Shoppers Drug Mart)one that I received for Christmas. Works fine. Helps. Don't think you have to spend a lot. Kelly
