Paladin-Clerics Weight Loss Journey

Introduction
Hi all, my name is Paladin-Cleric (why yes, I did play too much dungeons&dragons in my youth, thank you). Two weeks ago, the 12/4/15, I decided I really needed to loose some serious weight and get fit. There are two reasons for this;

1. I am due to play Best Woman (yes, that is correct, best woman) at my brothers wedding in August and I need to not look like a fat horse in the dress my mums going to make for me to wear.
2. I am going to Italy in september with my boyfriend (our first holiday together as a couple), and I intend to climb the volcano at pompeii as far as allowed, the mount Etna and to be able to walk round Rome without panting and sweating like a pig.

The Important Stuff

So, on to the important stuff, what am I doing to try and lose weight and get fit?, well...

1. Keeping a Food Diary
2. Keeping an Exercise Diary
3. Taking Sea Kelp (a natural metabolism booster)
4. Trying out the 28 day BooTea cleanse. (started on the 22/4/15)
5. Following BooTea I will be trying the Raspberry Ketones as recommended by Holland & Barretts

Thoughts

So, week one did not go well, but then, I didn't really try to change anything in week one aside from exercising more to see how it felt. I managed to do far more exercise than I had thoughts. 9 hrs is pretty good, though to be fair 9 sessions were fairly intense for me, while the other 4 were very low impact, but still, progress!

Clearly my calorie intake needs to come down, which is what I'm working on in week two at the moment (here's hoping the BooTea and Sea Kelp will give me a bit of a boost!), and I need to up the intensity of my exercise to get more out of it.

Problems

I've always had problems with my weight, and most of that stems from the fact that I'm lazy and eat too much. I am aware of this, but being aware doesn't help to overcome. I like food, or rather, I like chocolate and sugary cereal, and sandwiches and macaroni cheese and burgers! Fruit and vegetables give me heartburn. so I tend to avoid them unless I have a craving. Health food tastes like ash to me and nothing I seem to do makes it taste any better.

Now, I don't eat fast food, maybe once a month (sometimes not for up to 4 months at a time), and I eat crisps rarely. My main problem is chocolate and sweets and bread... but seriously, how do I stop myself. I do not have the willpower for it, once I start I can't seem to stop, and it doesn't matter how much I may have eaten of a good filling meal beforehand I could eat my way through four or five big bars of chocolate 200g bars mind, without thinking or stopping.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi .. welcome! :)

My biggest problem used to be chocolate, pasta and bread. There is this psychological thing that if you do something for 21 days it then becomes a habit... So just before Easter I vowed myself 21 days without chocolate, then on the 22nd if I fancied something sweet I would allow myself a treat. BUT - I have told my parents not to keep chocolate in the house, and when I go to work I leave my purse at home so I'm not tempted to stop off and buy anything on the way home. So as my treat, I will either have a chocolate snack a jack (64 calories) a time out bar (85 calories) or a chocolate cereal bar (87 calories), one of these with a cup of tea suits me just fine. I very rarely have a treat now days because I don't really crave them all that much.

Bread ... People avoid bread when they diet... I can't... don't ask why, I just can't. So I buy weight watchers food. For lunch instead of a sandwich I am now toasting a bagel and having a low fat cheese spread on it (34calories) If I fancy bread with pasta etc, I have petitis pain (111cals). So you may not have to give up the foods you love totally, just cut back and substitute the calorific foods for a food of the same type but with fewer calories. It's worked for me! Oh and My Fitnesspal App is great for tracking foods and calories.

Good Luck :)

Welcome!

I could have written almost the same post on food! Healthy food just doesn't taste good to me, but I am working on it. What I had to do, I tried limiting and restraint turned out not to be in my vocabulary, so I had to remove. My house does not have anything I shouldn't have in my day. I pick 1 meal once a week that I can enjoy something off limits, but I also need to enjoy in moderation or I will kill my calorie deficit easily! It's not easy, and I mess up from time to time, but I find not having it in sight was the best I could do.

Bread is tough, removing it was hard as I was at a loss on what to have for lunch if not a sandwich! What I did was remove lunch as a main meal and split my calories intake (less breakfast and supper) into essentially 3 snacks. I found foods I do like, that are fairly clean eating and have relied heavily on them to this point (boiled eggs, cheese, banana's with peanut butter, turkey bites, slices of red peppers). As you can see not much for fruit and veggie. I fit those in smoothies, especially the veggies, my morning smoothie sounds nasty but gives me 2 cups of green veggies I would not go near otherwise! I just mix it with a vanilla chia flavored protein and it masks it pretty good (still chalky but better than nothing).

I hope you can grab some ideas from that! I tend to go on and on sometimes :)

Thanks guys! I appreciate the welcome and the advice!

I'm just freshly showered after my second exercise session today (I have to do more than one on my days off to make up for the absolutely rubbish long shifts I'm doing it work). I like it when my exercise bike tells me I'm using up more calories in the same amount of time as my earlier one. makes me feel accomplished.

Looking through all these other threads I'm going to have to really start working on my targets!

had a frustrating call in work today, nothing seemed to be going right. Had my break straight afterwards and went an bought (and ate) an Easter egg, you know, the ones they sell cheap now that Easter is over.

I am so disappointed in myself. It's like I've failed miserably and all I want to do is eat more chocolate to make myself feel better. It's so hard not to give into thatt temptation right now. I don't want to 'write today off and start again tomorrow' but it feels so damn hard.

I was doing so well this week not buying extra snacks. Not perfect, but it was a step in the right direction.

Today is not a good day. Sigh...

*hugs.

The egg is finished. But u are not done yet! Sip some green tea and its a new hour! Hang in there a Couple more months to go and u be amazed wat Tis tiny egg taught u you in difficult moments.

We can do it!

About Me

Hi again, so I thought I might as well tell you a little about myself.

I am 28 years old (though people never seem to guess that, I suppose acting younger than I am helps with that. For the record, I behave in a Childlike manner, not Childish).

I am currently working a very sedentary job as a call centre agent. The hours are not fun and not stable, so I can be in from 8am to 5pm one day and then 11am to 9pm the next, so it makes scheduling exercise hard, as I travel over an hour to and from work and if I’m on a long shift I feel too wiped to do anything but crawl into bed and sleep.

I live (currently) with my parents and their two dogs. I say their two dogs only because all the other pets in the household are mine. I have two cats, Copper and Missy, and 5 turtles, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo and Oogway, whom I love a whole lot of a lot. I also have a boyfriend who seems to like me enough to put up with my moaning, which is a good sign I guess (and I suppose I love him too, but don’t tell my cats, they’ll get jealous).

I am also a published novelist. My first proper book (the second published, but the first needs to be very much fixed as the publishers were rubbish and didn’t even help me edit it or anything, I was only like 16 at the time!). Anyway, my first proper book, Ghost Mark is available at long last online (lulu, amazon etc.) and I am very pleased with myself. I am currently working on my second proper novel at the moment and hope to have it ready for publication by next year.

Other than that I’m a fairly boring sort of a person.

Exercise

Ok, so I need to discuss my current exercise habits;

I use a stationary bike for my intense exercise sessions. Normally I put on an episode of something (at the moment it’s season 3 of the A-Team) and some music I’ve found that has a good sort of ‘pumping rhythm’ to keep my legs moving.

Other than that I sort of do walking, in the sense that I try and do walking and it very much turns into a moderate paced walk (because I swear my boyfriend is walking through porridge he walks so slow), I end up taking his dog ahead of him and doubling back a few times, but hey, exercise is exercise right?

I also have a cross trainer, but I don’t feel confident enough to start using it just yet. I only last about 5 minutes before I feel all sore and unhappy and because it’s only 5 minutes I feel disheartened. Maybe when I feel much fitter I’ll try it again.

I sporadically do sit-ups and crunches, probably not enough to really help tone up any, but I keep reading how it’s better to lose the fat in your stomach/gut area before trying to tone it up or you could end up looking even fatter.

Thoughts

Week two is now over me at last.

My main goal this week was to try and cut my calorie consumption and I managed to do so by just over 9000 calories this week, which averages out to about 1,200 calories per day over the course of the week. I’m not saying I ate any healthier, but I definitely did eat less, even with my impromptu late Easter egg scoff after a bad call in work this week.

I also managed more intense exercise sessions, which I think is good. I missed a day of exercise though as one of my turtles went missing in the garden and I spent the whole afternoon searching for his little tiny self (he eventually showed up again the following morning thankfully, none the worse for wear).

Problems

While I’m obviously pleased with some aspects of this week, there are still problems.

Scheduling in exercise. My job doesn’t leave me a lot of time to play with to schedule exercise around it, and it sometimes feels that everything I’ve been putting off during the week needs to be squished into my two days off, which includes my weeks’ worth of time spent with my boyfriend, cleaning turtle tanks, getting some writing done and other stuff, exercise is sort of relegated to the back burner.

Cutting back on calories is hard, because I need to start finding things to eat that will fill me up but not go over on the calories. I suppose this also ties into healthy eating, which was always going to be an issue for me because I don’t generally eat healthy things…

I was also expecting my weight to sort of decrease a lot more. I know that’s wishful thinking on my part, to actually see the results. This is one of the main reason I always end up giving up my weight loss attempts, I don’t see any real progress and I fall back into bad habits. Just for once I would like to see my efforts pay off noticeably soon enough that I won’t end up quitting.

Goals for Next Week

1.Cut out at least another 5666 calories to bring me down to the ideal calorie consumption of 9800.
2.Try to schedule in more exercise sessions.
3.Try to eat heathier.

So I've found an interest exercise idea, Zombies, Run! it's supposed to be a good way to get fit through running from zombies. I figured I'd download it and give it a go. I also wanted an excuse to get more up to date version of the ipod, so I went ahead and bought one. Just gotta wait for it to arrive and then I'm gonna do some serious Zombie survival!

Well, that was just my little update. I'll let you all know how it works out for me.

the ipod is a good idea... i might get one too. now im using my mobile phone for workout music and its distracting seeing the watsapp and emails notifications coming while working out haha.

just curious, is ZR video or audio?

It's audio as far as I'm aware, but as you run you 'collect things' that you can go online I think after your run and build up a Zombie surviour camp. It's interactive like that which seems fun, so what you do means something, even if it's only a game. From what I can tell its instructions that interrupt your regular music with this like "The Zombies are approaching, run like hell" and "you have lost the hoard, you can slow down and take a breather" or something, it's got a story as well which sounds interesting.

lol. My phone never leaves my bag unless I remember I need to call someone, people can go for days waiting for me to pick up a text message because I just don't use my phone. My ipad on the other hand gets used constants, as does my old ipod, so the new one will see plenty of use! lol.

It has been awhile since I had a turtle, I want one pretty bad now. Even a snapping turtle will do. Making exercising fun is the best route to go definitely. If you don't enjoy it, odds are not good in continuing it. So it's good you're experimenting and trying new things out. August is not too far off, you've got some nice goals and I believe you will be accomplishing them. I read your problems listed a few posts above, might I suggest actually exercising at work while you're doing whatever the tasks are. You can still get in a nice work out without taking a break from work. Help burn some calories. As far as food, I'd focus on fiber heavy items. Beans (lentil for example) can be very filling.

Don't be discouraged if the pounds aren't melting off quicker than you'd like. Sometimes your body goes into a shock mode where it is trying to figure out what is going on. You'll have a break through eventually and see the pounds coming off easily. Also it can be misrepresented. The pounds can fluctuate when you're exercising, which builds muscle, and muscle wears more than fat. So while you may think you didn't lose much weight, you probably added muscle but decreased the bad fat tissues, which is what you want. Don't be discouraged. It's ok if you can't finish something at the same pace, do it at your pace, but don't give up. Eventually you'll do the entire thing and be extremely proud. You keep pounding the work outs, you're doing awesome, and you keep chipping away at the fat, you're going to look great when the wedding day arrives. Sorry for writing so much. I just believe you can do this.

Ahhh... you have turtles?! I'm jealous. I've always wanted a turtle. lol. I'm also trying to avoid looking like a fat horse at a wedding, but it's my own. lol. Welcome to the forum! :)

Such thing exists? lol... i think im behind the times. it does sound motivating such that exercise becomes a game and you will enjoy it even the more. let me knw when you start on it! should be fun!

My turtles are awesome, 4 common musks and a map turtle. They all get on well, which is good.

My new iPod is due to arrive today so I'm going to try out this running thing tomorrow on my day off! Fun fun!

Sigh.

I'm trying my best to bring my calories down, I bought loads of little snacks that are light on calories (sorta) to help with this, but I ended up noshing on 5 today. Still, I think I still managed less calories than a day last week, but still, disappointing...

And even worse, my iPod didn't turn up today (it was apparently delivered when I was at work and signed for by my neighbour. I can only hope I can catch them before they go to work so I can actually use it tomorrow like I planned. I have Zombies to escape from!)

Big day planned for tomorrow, cleaning and cleaning and more cleaning, interspearsed with some exercise and writing and game making... effort. Almost wish I could sleep in. sigh.

i been getting light snacks too to ease the cravings throughout the day. i actually bought raw popcorn so i could do my own kind of flavoring over it.

u mean your neighbor can just sign for your item? i would hv requested the courier to re-deliver at another day & time. hope you get yr ZR soon!

eh....you really like cleaning that much? come come, my house is open for you. hahahaha....

I would have requested it be redelivered today (because I'm off) but the choice was taken out of my hands, the delivery guy left it with my neighbour apparently. I'll need to get over there this morning.

I actually hate cleaning, which is why I'm trying to do it all at once! lol.

So I just joined MyFitnessPal to help keep a better track of my calorie intake (and because it can work out calories burned when I'm doing my running and other exercise). Apparently I've been overestimating some of my calories, not by a whole lot, but some. I can't decide if that's a good thing or not, because now I'm gonna know I can fit that extra snack in and want it even when I shouldn't.

Ah well, all to the greater good! Weightloss here I come.

(also, is it weird I'm spending more time online looking up this site and other weightloss sites that my usual online activities?)
