Painful breathing when I run

Im 17 and male 5'6" and weigh 10 stone 5 (145lbs). I have just decided to 'get fit' and lose a few lbs. I have never really done much exercise, i dont play sport or anything like that. Im pretty heathly, I dont have any illnesses. I am just lazy.
I decided to go for a run today and pretty soon after I start i get a pain, like a burning in my lungs. I think im breathing wrong or something. Its like the cold air is hurting my chest. It will go away if i walk it off for 5 mins but now (around 20 mins after i got back) I have a bit of a cough. Also when I ran I got a mucasy film in my mouth (i know its gross). Has anyone ever herd of this? Is it because im taking things to fast and my body isnt used to it? Maybe the cold weather? the freezing cold air? I want to keep running (though i think i will need to slow jog) but if these pains keep comming I dont think i would be able to stand it.

Well sorry about the annoying first post but if anyone can help that would be great. :D

thanks

If you are having "pain" when breathing, you should seek advice from your physician.

thanks for the reply. I plan on going to the docters. Im just wondering if its anything thats not uncommon in people who have just started running. It not when i breathe sitting, walking, jogging or even running inside, But when i run outside it gets painful.

thanks again

I've had all those symptoms before including the cough post workout. Take things slower. You're probably pushing too hard and your respiratory system just simply cannot keep up. You're stressing your lungs, making them function in a manner in which they've never functioned (high breathing rate, deep breaths, high Oxygen demand from your body, ect.)

Aside from concern about your lungs burning I'd also be concerned with going too hard for too far and too early in your quest to get in shape. You'll more than likely develop and overuse injury which might knock you off tract and force you to start all over again once the injury heals.

Start easy. Walk to warm up, slow jog as you can and walk more when you need to making progress each time. If jogging is still proving painful then try walking up a steep hill. It will boost your heart rate and breathing rates to something that's tough but more manageable.

Best of luck.

Hi, thats what i thought. It only happens when i run, I can walk and jog and my lungs are fine i think it am 'trying to run before i can walk' kind of thing. I am just going take a slow jog tomorrow and see how it goes. I am also going to see the docter just to rule out any illness. Thank you for the advice and the reply.

Yes I agree with LV on seeing a doctor as well. You could have a preexisting condition, such as asthma (an over diagnosed issue IMO), that is the cause of this as well.

To give a bit of my history as it relates here: My pediatrician (back in the day) upon hearing I had a potential respiratory issue did not hesitate to prescribe asthma medications for both my brother and I. In fact there was nothing wrong with either of us. I was simply not in shape, pushed too hard and my lungs paid the price. As I worked out more the discomfort subsided and eventually went away. I can't recall exactly how Asthma ever came into play because I was too young at the time.

Also define running versus jogging. I say I am going running when I am going for a 4 mile run at a 10:00 min/mi pace but it also means I could be doing mile repeats or hill workouts.

Yeah it seems everyone has asthma these days.
Well I just think of running simply as going faster and jogging as slower over the same distance. Today i ran around 2.5 miles, I was around 25-30mins alltogether. Though half a mile i did walk.

So you were moving pretty quick if you covered 2.5 mile in 25 minutes with a 1/2 mile of walking. Probably want to slow it down a tad from there.

Yeah, over the next few days i will try out a few different paces and see which one is most comfortable for me at the moment. Thanks again for all your help
