Pain in shins while walking

My wife and I just went out to walk our dogs (boxers, see attached). We walked about 1 1/2 miles at a pretty good pace. After 1/2 mile or so, my shins started hurting, almost like shin splints. My question is, are they shin splints? I just started back exercising and have ridden my road bike the last two days, 10 miles the 1st day, 13 1/2 miles yesterday. Do you think this is probably related to the biking or is it from the walking?

Never heard of someone getting shin splints from just walking...i got them slightly from running.

Yeah you can get them walking. Have you got a good pair of shoes. Is one of your boxers called tyson? Nearly every boxer I have met is called tyson.

I've got an almost brand new pair of Nike running shoes.

They really felt like shin splints. They almost felt like the front muscle by the shin was cramping, especially when I would bring my foot forward to take another step. Almost like I was overstretching the front muscle as I brought my foot forward. I was wondering more if it was from the walking or the fact that I had been riding the bike the last few days after a month or so of very limited activity.

Nope, neither one is named Tyson. The larger one in the foreground is named Ginger, the leaner one, further in back is Dillon (we got him from a boxer rescue). Both are great dogs!

Yeap, it's shin splints all right, and it happened for a number of reasons: your new shoes, the pace that you had (too fast) when walking, as it's totally different than cycling, the surface you were walking on, plus stiff calves believe it or not! Try stretching your calves after exercising, it will help you with your shin splints and be patient and don't do too much too often, give yourself time to recover properly, at least a day between workouts.

just because you have NEW shoes doesn't mean you have the right ones. see if you can't have your feet evaluated by a professional. Your feet can change over timeso you might need a different kind of shoe than you have previously been using.

i wouldn't commit totally to new shoes; i would rotate them with what i had already. don't wear yours to death, so you can do so.
