Overweight and Need Your Help

Hello everyone,

I have a problem right now, I'm 18, currently 5'10" and weigh 250 lbs.

I need help. My goal is to get to my ideal weight which if I was told correctly was 160-180 lbs (so my goal is to lose 80 pounds. Can anyone recommend any kind of exercises I could do?

I personally think that the best thing to do would be to simply run a lot (I'm not sure how much, it's the reason I'm asking people here) and to eat healthier. My house is full of a lot of healthy & unhealthy stuff (mostly due to my brothers).

What could I eat as alternatives? My parents are all for buying me things for a healthier alternative but I'm not sure what. And like I asked before, how much should I run and how often? I essentially wanted to know what I should expect since I'm really inactive...for now...

Any ideas? I appreciate it

welcome to the site and congratulations for wanting to make the change and having your family support your efforts.

for food -there's a few threads in the nutrition section on grocery lists -b ut you really want to stick to whole foods - unprocessed choices - and limit the amounts of refined carbs (ie white bread, plain pasta, sugars, etc)

And keep your portions appropriate - not overloading your plate but reasonable.

and adding in some strength training would be a great help as well

Thank you so much for your help, I'll definitely take everything you said into consideration and I've already started to stop drinking soda and not eat junk food.

wholemeal bread is better for you....i replaced my love for cheese with cream cheese spread....

and as i said in another thread...i always see how much fat and sugar food has in it before consuming....

10grams of fat and 10 grams of sugar is my limit

I'm roughly your height. Here are some things which seem to make a difference for me:

For exercises you cant really beat running/jogging, but if that is a struggle for you then cycling is second best imo. I used to cycle a lot in the summer and i was constantly losing at a steady 2lb a week. I cycled about 3 times a week doing at least 2 miles. I built that up over time and did 11 miles which isnt that great, but i was happy with it. But now because its winter i just use the treadmill at home.

The type of exercise is different. You can either do normal cardio vascular or you can do H.I.I.T. More info on HIIT here:

High-intensity interval training - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A quick google search on H.I.I.T will come up with better explanations though.

I did a lot of cardio in the summer during which time i lost 2lb each week, but i recently switched to H.I.I.T because i had hit a plateau with cardio. I cant comment on the effects of H.I.I.T yet though as i havnt been doing it long.

It may benefit to do cardio first thing in the morning before breakfast, just have a drink or banana first. It supposedly burns body fat because the food from the day before is burnt during the night.

Drink a lot of water, at least 2 litres a day, that seemed to help me.

Be sure to include fibre in your diet.

Have a lot of protein.

Start a resistance training plan, this way you will improve metabolism.

I heard that doing sit ups and other ab workouts frequently (as in 50 or more) actually helps break down fat in the belly and gut which increases weight loss around that area.

Get at least 8 hours sleep

Take a multivitamin a day.

Dont skip meals.
