Overhead squats?

1. When u r preforming the overhead squat do you try to keep your arms extended in the upward position while your squating or do you knid of let then come to abut 90 degrees(like a verticle shoulder press)?

2. My upper back was hurting when i did them today,(near where the shoulder blades come close together) could it just be an embalace or my form maybe be wrong?

3. These are BAD A$$!!!!

you want to keep your arms perpendulicar to the floor at all times, don't let the bar go too far forward or backward. Most people will have to tilt their upper body a bit forward to squat, so the arms would point a bit backwards from the torso.

the pain was probably due to you not being used to support loads overhead in that manner.

ok, that makes sense. Does this lift actualy work your legs much or does it mainly target you upper body and stabilizing muscles. (it was my first time so i only had about 25's on the bar)

it works the legs great, when you're new at the lift your stabilization will probably get the biggest punch since it is unusual. I'd do regular heavy squats in addition though.

I agree with Karky that they have to be done with another, heavier form of squats (back or front).

Check out his website on Chinese weightlifters who are loading up 300+ lbs for the overhead squats!!

It makes me jealous as hell looking at these photos. You'll notice, also, that these guys have lats the size of volkswagens.
