Over Trainning

I know a bit about overtrainning not much so i have a couple of questions

1) Is it possible to overtrain through cardio alone?
2) Do You still lose weight by Overtainning or does it make it harder to lose the same amount of weight?

Its been my experience that you can over train with any form of exercise.

You can either exhaust your muscles or your whole body, but what your objectives are will determine you training and your definition of over training would then change as well.

If you're trying to build bulk in your muscles, then over training your muscles will not give you the results. pushing heavy weights are what you need to build them yes, but the growth only starts when you're resting and then your muscles get a chance to repair the tearing you put them through.

If you want to lose weight and tone, you'll be doing more reps and cardio, but doing them everyday will leave your body exhausted. sticking to a certain time limit each day and weekly schedule of training days helps you avoid over training. depending on your goals do different exercise for different body parts on different days. When you start feeling like your body can handle more, instead of increasing the time you train, simply change the exercise or the itensity at which you train.

Listen to your body is the key.

TrevorM is right, rest days are very important.

But for weight loss, what you eat matters much more then how much exercise you do.

I find the easiest way to tell you're over-training if you NEVER see any improvement. Say you run 5 miles for a month and you never improve... that to me would be you over-training. Lifting the same weights week after week is another one. If my lifts aren't going up after a month I just take a 4-5 day break and come back stronger.

In my experience is that it is very hard to over-train unless you're hitting the same muscle group 2-3 times a week.

Hate to say it, but I have seen it happen- I go to the gym 5 days a week, sometimes 6 days, I see the same girl there on the same machines doing the eact same thing. Very thin, she used to be at my level when I started in April- keeping up with me at my pace. I have improved a little (not as much as I should!) but she has infact gotten so much slower that I wonder if she is really unwell. (Anorexia)

Added to that you get the same bunch of guys pumping the same weights day in, day out. I have to say though, they take 'rests' between sets of up to 3 songs long- about 10 mins. Not sure if thats down to over training, boredom or laziness!! However, they haven't become overly 'cut', 'ripped' or whatever else you want to call it. Infact they don't seem to have changed physique at all. (Not that I'd judging at all:blush5:)
