I know some people who think that it doesn't matter what you eat as long as you stay in your calorie limit and work out you can loose weight. What do you all think of this?

I think that is true. It is all about the calories. But I think that it would be a lot harder to lose weight that way. Healthier foods have fewer calories, therefore you are able to eat more of them. By eating unhealthy things and trying to stay within a calorie limit, you are much more likely to be hungry....because you cant eat nearly as much.

Also, one of the points of losing weight is to get healthier, so by eating unhealthy foods, you are completely losing that aspect.

It does and it doesn't. If you want to lose weight, you have to be in a caloric deficit, period. If your maintenance calorie level is 2,000 calories a day, and you eat 2,500 calories of lettuce every day, you will gain about a pound a week. If you eat 1,500 calories of Twinkies every day, and nothing else, you will lose about a pound a week. It's as simple as that.

That said, the quality of your food makes a HUGE difference. Generally, calorically dense junk food is not filling and will leave you hungry in a couple of hours. The best bet is to shoot for a truly balanced diet, minimizing white carbs and processed food, and maximizing REAL food, that is, food that has not been extensively processed.

Diets based purely on the type of food you eat are basically "gimmick" diets. They work by putting you in a caloric deficit.

I agree with the above information. Eating healthy foods gives me more energy and motivation to exercise, and junk food just makes me want to sit on the couch all day. I know that wasn't really the question that was asked, but that is one way that eating healthy food instead of just a certain amount of calories has helped me shed body fat.

You may be missing essential macronutrients and such to your diet.

I reccomend if anyone is eating at a calorie defecit, to take vitamins and fish oil pills.

Once you do that, then hell, you can drink 2000 calories worth of coke everyday, and lose weight. But I do not reccommend this.

A vital diet should consist of the right number of proteins (for muscle maintenance) and fats (for cellular function). Carbs are the bodies main source of fuel, so I think its totally stupid giving that up.

Some people think of a "low carb" diet life style. I say, think of a "High protein" life style with moderate carbs.

I think when it comes to nutrition, choices and timing are essential, physically and mentally.
But as far as choices go, low gi food can help keep you feeling awake and energetic, stave off hunger.
Protein rich foods can in boost the thermic effect of food and help make you feel fuller.

If weight loss is to be successful long term then it has to be as part of a long term lifestyle change, and that has to include eating healthy foods. Eating healthy and exercising will do so much more for you than losing weight. It is essential to weight management, good skin, hair, good health, digestion, stress management, heart condition, cardio vascular health, happiness, strong bones, disease resistance, etc etc etc....
