One thing I'm fuzzy on...

My booklet on disordered eating says that I should be free of counting calories, pounds, etc. But if I do that I will never reduce? Will someone please fill me in?

i'm no expert - (I just think I know everything) but what i think you want to focus on is healthy eating (ie fruits/veggies/low fat proteins/whole grains) in realistic portions - ie a mountain of spaghettie bad... but a portion of whole grain spaghetti - good... and eat until you are satisfied - not uncomfortably full...

Just pay attention to your body and slowing down while eating will make that easier.

I'm not sure what you mean about the pamphlet, but most people who don't count calories have no real idea of how much they are truely consuming. Eat slightly below your maintance amount, lots of protien and some good carbs and fats, incorporate strength training and cardio - and you'll see the weight come off.

It is important to figure out how many calories you should be consuming for weight loss, and then in my opinion a good idea to track them for awhile to make sure you are on course. If you are eating a similar heathy diet daily, then you shouldnt have to be strict about tracking calories.

When I started my diet, I am glad I started tracking calories because I figured out that I actually wasnt eating quite enough. But the most important thing is eating the right foods, whole grains, protein, fruits, veges. :)

with people who have eating disorders, one of the things that's strongly suggested is to not count calories at the outset - because it leads to the obsessive (wrong word but it's th word that popped into my head) that got them the disorder to begin with...

Correct. I would not concern yourself with calorie counting if you are coming off of an eating disorder. The temptation to become obsessed is to great.

Mal had it right. Start making better food choices and being cognizant of your your portions. If you aren't losing still, that means you need to eat a little less. That is all.

These are very blanket recommendations BTW, without knowing anything about you. :)

I see the logic maleficent is explaining however it will be tough to know what is or isn't working for you if you are not tracking your calories.

That's true LV, and certainly why I started tracking calories (I went into it kicking and screaming because, I ummm...tend to be obsessive) ;)

However, sometimes, small steps to start is what gets the snowball rolling. I spent the first 19 weeks of my commitment to losing weight, simply cutting down on my portions and chosing healthier options.

I lost 19 pounds, and those pounds lost gave me the incentive to go a little deeper, and pull more out of myself then I could at the beginning.
