Ok... Totally confused now..

My current goal is to lose 8 lb of fat so I'm conducting a proper research on this subject. I read this book last night, German Body Comp by Charles Poliquin and it confused me completeley. He claims that athletes on his programme lose smth like 7-9% bf in couple of months because his excercise technique stimulates growth hormone production. Then he also mentions that his new clients only eat 40g of carbs in the first two weeks. Well this sounds pretty much like Atkins to me.

So the first question is -- Do they lose weight because of the excercise of because they hardly have any carbs?

I'm currently eating 5 meals a day (6g of fat, 30g protein and 30g of carbs) Carbs I eat are usually whole grains, brown rice, pulses, yeast free and wheat free bread. Is it too much? Shall I stick to just vegetables bun then I need to eat loads of broccoli to get to 30g of carbs. Hope I'm making sense here.

He also completely dismisses cardio excercise. He claims it damages the muscle in the long run. Reading this forum I had an understanding that you have to do some high intensity training to lose fat.

Second question -- So what is it, cardio or just weight training?

I'm currently resting for a week with the new training regime starting on Monday. So I kind of have to come up with the best programme by then.

Your thoughts will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

If you're only eating 30g of protein and 30g of carbs and 6 g of fat per day... that equals only 294 calories.

1 gram of fat has 9 calories
1 gram of carbohydrates has 4 calories
1 gram of protein has 4 calories

I'm confused. :)

Stick to common sense. Some people do not do as much cardio because they have a different body type than most. OR PERHAPS THEY HAVE MORE LEAN MUSCLE MASS TO START WITH- THEREFORE THEY BURN MORE CALORIES PER DAY- THEREFORE CARDIO IS NOT AS NECESSARY.

Sorry for caps, but I hate when people put out books and then they preach that their way is the best and they leave no room for other options. It makes me angry because it confuses people more than anything else.

Stick to cardio and strength training. Stick to 5-6 small meals per day. Each meal is 1 carb and 1 protein. Eat every 2-3 hours and the first meal within the first hour after waking.

Let me ask you this... do you think you could keep up Charles' program for the rest of your life? Now don't get me wrong... Charles is well known and many people respect him. But for most people... this program is NOT the best option.

Thanks Lynn,

I thought that programme would be hard to sustain long term. It's probably very good for athletes or bodybuilders just before their big event.

Just to clarify, I'm eating 6g fat, 30g carbs/ 30 protein x 5 times a day which gives me roughly 1500 kcal.
