Ok, here we go!

Hi everyone,
Well I have just graduated from university and my summer is upon me! As a result I know longer have an excessive amount of work left as an excuse for why I don’t go to the gym. Long story short is that I need to lose some serious weight, on the upside I know I can do it. Back when I started university (4 years went by fast) I weighed in at 320lbs, and let me tell you that’s not fun. Between barely being able to fit into the seats in the lecture theatres and having a hatred for all forms of stairs, I got really tired of being "the fat guy". Fortunately, two of my buddies convinced me to get into golf with them, and my weight loss started. Let me say walking on a very hilly 6.5km long (if you hit the ball in a straight line:p ) golf course with a golf bag strapped to your bag is not as easy as it seems. In any case the weight started to fall off, and kept coming off thanks to my active and outdoorsy summer job. Now, I am 21 years old, 6 feet tall and 245lbs (I was 235...this last semester was a bad one...I don’t even know where those ten pounds came from), and judging on past summers I can lose about 30lbs fairly easily. The only problem this year is that my job is inside, and about as inactive as you can get! I'm going to try to get out as much as possible, but I know that I am going to need to start hitting the gym. I want to get to about 200lbs this summer, and after taking a quick look around the forums I guess some HIIT and some weight training with an improved diet will get me started on the right track. I'll make a post later with what I eat (when I find out what I eat...) as well as a proposed workout scheme. As for why I want to lose the weight? To look and feel better and boost my confidence (additionally people treat you better the less fat you are...which is pretty sad because I'm the same person I always was). I'll try to post some pics too (look for them in the Men's pic section). Oh and one last thing, is it possible to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time? I’m not talking about getting the physique of a Greek god or something, but just an improvement to my overall strength while losing weight.

Thanks for reading all of that:D

P.S. Any golfers in here?

hey mate,

i live on the other side of the world to you and i decided to do the same thing throughout my summer vacation.

I started at; 20 years old, 105kgs (231lbs) and 178cm (5"10')

and in 4 months i was down to 85kg (187lbs), and i am now 80kg (176lbs)[after 5 or so months].
So 50lbs is deffinatly do able if you put your mind to it.

I started with just reducing the amount i ate, then i started eating healthy things. I joined a gym and started doing straighy cardio 4 times a week, for between 40-70mins. I started off burning off about 600cals a session, to 1200cals at my peak, which took 1hr 20mins.

Although this was effective it perhaps as others may suggest not the most effective way of loosing weight.

I began to include weight training to my routine at the start of month 3, and since then i have gradually reduced the amount of cardio work outs. Going to the gym has become a social activity for me now, and its the days i dont go to the gym that i dread.

Looking back, it really wasn't all that hard.... all it takes is a little bit of effort at the start to keep going, but once u stick at it the results become very evident, and the weight just flys off.

3-4 times a week is adequate for workouts as long as you cut down on your intake (ie. the amount of calories you consume). I didn't drink alcohol for about 2 months (however, i still remaind sociable, much of which can be contributed to the fact that i didn't change my diet to eating 6-8 meals a day, so i was able to eat with my friends and family and no isolate myself from others because of my eating plan), and really only drank water, and milk with cereal along with japanese/chinese tea.

When i first started my fitnes plan i was still eating pasta and steak, The massive increase in activity was enough to counter the amount of calories i was consuming.... however, once i began loosing weight i also started eating less and eating a lot more healthy.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, its nice to hear that there's someone else out there thats done this. Its a nice reminder for me that I can do this this summer.

Thanks,
Golfman
