Oh my... I can't run

The only type of exercise I've been geting in the last 5 weeks (and why not, the last 2 years) is riding the bike. The results are great so far, but I don't want to just lose weigh, but to become athletic in a year or two.
Yesterday, while riding my bike on an isolated road I decided to try some running... the result was bad: it seems like I've forgot how to do it.
Is this because of my weight? Is it still too much and should I lose more before starting to run, or what?
Bad things happen when you give up on sports for a long time...

Take it slow...

Nothing good comes quickly.

Are you to heavy? Likely not, I started running in earnest when I was 260 pounds. The key is to starting slow. Yo ucan't just jump into it and expect to be on par with anyone else, including your past self. I started off running 1km in 3 bursts, with lots of walking (and panting for breath) in between. Now at 243 I am almost at 10km straight through with no problems, should be there by the end of the month. Moderation is the key.

Take it slowly and give your body time to adjust and get stronger. Riding a bike is nowhere near the same stress on your legs that running will be. But I am sure you can get back to running if you really want to. With a little patience and persistence you can do it.

I can't run either.

I usually do like 2-3 minute stints on the treadmill, slowly you'll be able to do more, just stick with it.

At the moment I can only run on the treadmill for 1-2 minutes before having to walk. I either get out of breath, get a cramp in my side or else my legs just start hurting! I've only just started trying to run but I know that if I keep at it I will build up eventually to be able to run for much longer. I think its all what your used to, some people can cycle for miles but if they haven't tried running then it'll feel really hard.
good luck, keep it up and I'm sure it'll get easier!

Exactly why I started on the cross trainer, for comfort.
If you're just starting, you will not be able to run, simple as, it is actually quite a difficult thing to do when it comes down to it.

For 6-8 weeks, stick to bike/rower/eliptical :)

I'm starting to think it's just a matter of time before I'll get used to it; until then I'll take it slow and push for a little bit more every time.
I remember having almost the same problem when I started cycling: first time I went for 7 miles and it was very hard and exhausting. A month later I can cycle for 60 miles (probably more, haven't tried).
So thanks for all the good words and support. :)

Try the Couch to 5k program. It is really easy to get into the "running" state of mind with this. I absolutely HATE running but tried this program and really liked it.

Very interesting program. I'll definitely give it a shot. Thanks.

But it will need to be postponed a little (max 2 weeks) until my BMI will tell me I'm 'just' overweight and not obese any more. I guess that should give me some confidence boost.

Don't worry, you will get there soon!! I know I'm anxious to break that "obese" classification as well. I figured running would be one of the fastest ways to get there.

Anybody can run! Start slow and don't get discouraged. Make sure you've got a great pair of running shoes. Listen to your body. Good luck!
