off to a good start!

so i have decided to make a lifestyle change finally! i am 31 years old and have been overweight pretty much since i was 12 (6th grade i started getting fat).

the last few years i have fluctuated between 250-280, there might have been a few times where i got down into the 240s, but never by meaning to.

i got married 2.5 years ago and my wife is from australia, we live here in sitka alaska. she is in good shape (her BMI is in the upper end of "normal". she is a healthy eater for the most part and has been bugging me off an on about eating better. it never works for someone else to push you, it has to be a personal desicion. she is a major asset now as i change my lifestyle.

i have always been active. hiking, hunting, i love to swim, things like that.

i lost some weight by stopping fast food about a month ago, but other than that, did nothing. i noticed i had lost a little bit of weight on our crappy scale (reads +-10 lbs, depending on how you stand on it, LOL).

so last tuesday, i made a decision to change my lifestyle permanently. i am now riding my bike to work every day (rain or shine) 10 minutes each way with hills. on the ride home i detour to the gym and swim. i do this each day and its going great! i am swimming 1250-1500 yrds each session. after i swim i finish my ride home. at work i'm not too active (outboard mechanic) but i'm always on my feet, walking around, climbing in and out of boats off and on.

last saturday lois and i climbed one of the mountains behind town, sea level to the top is 2550 ft, we climbed up in 2 hours, and down in 1.

the biggest change i have made is eating. i never controlled how much i ate. i like icecream (like everyone) and ate a lot of that.

in the past i have made feeble attempts to loose weight but could never get the food thing figured out. for the first time, i'm now counting all my calories each day.

i'm a slave to routine, and its really working for me now. i wake up in the morning, and write out my breakfast, lunch and beaktime cals, then after i get home, figure out dinner.

i'm eating 1900-2200 cals per day, and i DO NOT feel like i'm starving my self. i'm eating healthier food and watching cals helps keep my portions under control. i plan on counting cals until i get to my target weight, by then i'll have a good idea of what and how much to eat to maintain a healthy BMI.

when i weighed in last wednesday night (5-5-10) with a digital scale, i came in at 268.8 lbs... my second weigh in last night (5-12-10) came in at 260.4!!!! lots more than i thought. but i do realise you loose more at first.

one thing, in just a week, i already notice a difference!!!!!

anyway, i found this website and have done some lurking this last week, i enjoyed looking at all the 'before and after' photos of members here, sure inspires me!!!

Hey Man,

You are off to a good start. Your wife is indeed a good asset. Your action to count your food is the correct first thing to do. Your active lifestyle is also a good secondary plan. Rinse and repeat and the weight will come off.

What questions do you have?

Frank

Good on you! Sounds like you've got a good balance of exercise & food. Post some before & after photos so you can inspire us too!

You are indeed off to a good start. I do have a couple of suggestions though. At your weight and activity level, you are probably a little on the low side of the calories. That's okay at the start when you've got lots of fat to lose, but don't be afraid to bump it up a little, as you start to get leaner and hungrier.

The other suggestion is to add some weight lifting to your routine. This will help to keep from losing too much of your muscle mass. You will lose some muscle along with the fat, so it's a good idea to try to hold onto as much muscle as possible.

first off, i do have a question.

how exactly to people figure out their "target weight"? i know all about those fat loss and BMI calculators but shouldn't it be more about fat % instead? a muscular guy will show as being overweight on the BMI scale...

i set my target weight for 190. when i get there, i'll see how i'm doing i guess...

harold, good idea. actually last night was a good night. my wife met me at work, we then rode our bikes to the gym and did these activities:

-raquetball= 50 minutes
-eliptical treadmill= 20 minutes
-weight training= 30 minutes

then we rode home.

today, i'm sore in my upper body and i added smoked king salmon to my food list today to up the calories and protein.

i'm skipping weights tonite and gonna just swim.

You're right. BMI is not a good indicator for people with lots of muscle. Just coincidentally, I ran across this article that suggests using the ratio of waist size to height.
Actually I think the old fashioned "pinch an inch" test is probably as good as anything. If you can pinch a roll of fat on your belly thicker than an inch, you need to lose some fat.
