Off the scales... a brutesquad log/journal.

Hello, my name is brutesquad. I am a little shy. I am very motivated because I have had enough. I am following in the foot steps of my father, grand father, grand mother, many of my mothers brothers, heart desease and diabetes runs rampant in my family and I can't let it happen to me.

I have before pictures that I will probably share later on as I can give you a 1 month progress pic.

I have gone through life where it was O.K. to be big. I remember my childhood with it being accepted. Not a single family member was skinny. The kids tend to ran normal size though, kinda like me good at hockey but I was a chubby little guy. I broke my leg at the age of 13 and gained ~60lbs over a course of 10 months. I have never really been healthy since.

I am now 21, almost 22. I am 6'4" and I am off the scales. I mean at my gym I don't register on the scale. So lets say 350+ (Gusstimate weight would be ~355 but I don't care that much) I have had enough.

It's a pretty good theme though, I'll be one happy MF when I am on the scales though.

I work at a call center with pretty crappy hours but thankfully I have a 24h fitness service in my city.

It is curently 3:54am and I am about to go to the gym.

I am going to return with my first workout log and I will outline my diet.

My girlfriend is also going to sign up and start her own log as well. Its totally awesome when you have two motivated induviduals.

Here is a questionarre.

-- How much weight do you want to lose?
100 lbs
-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight?
12-14 months.
-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?
At first I am going to use a very large calorie defecit and slowly taper back to maintance. As someone who has been fat a majority of their whole life I need to see changes because I know this isn't right.

I have a gym membership and plan to go 3+ times a week with 3 being the lowest, During the RFL diet I may stick to 3 days a week and then on my 2 week maintance period do 5 days a week

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?
I have the best partner in the world who is there to be my support.
-- How realistic is your goal?
2lbs a week for a year seems doable. It will take commitment but it is defenitley within reach.
-- When will you start?
I already have, when I started I was off the scales, when I weighed myself last night I was on em but still 350+.

1. What is your current height and weight? 6'3" and off the scales (~360ish)
2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be? (<240)
3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now? <310 ideally.
4. Why do you want to lose weight? To be healthier, I am tired of being the "big guy".
5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event? Well if I don't get healthy I'm going to look fat at my funeral. That would be BRUTESQUAD!
6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals? I love to eat, lots of bad food.
7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem? Lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle.
8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight? Running, lifting heavy things. Nutrition.
9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight? About 1.5 years ago I lost 40lbs in 2 months crash dieting. Met a terrible girl at the time and put all the weight back on. Thats where I am now.
10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back? I went back to old lifetyle.
11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work? My last time was a succsess.
12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time? Plan on calorie counting and using Fitday.
13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook? Starting to cook all my meals at home. Allowing 1 (one) "free" meal.
14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go? If it can be cooked fast, starts with pizza, or ends in burger. Pretty much anything bad for you.
15. What are your three favorite foods? Pasta, Pizza, Burgs.
16. What are your three favorite restaurants? Olive Garden, Random Pizza Place, Flavor of the week fastfood.
17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food? Eat healthier, count calories. Track macros.
18. If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different? I would have a lot more self confidence and walk with a hella cool swagger. Seriously I would be happy, would probably make a breakfast, wait 2 hours and go for a run. Drink a protein shake and start the day.
19. Do you eat when you are not hungry? I have.
20. Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)? Sometimes.
21. Do you hide your food or eat in secret? No.
22. Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed? Absolutley.
23. Do you eat as a reward? Oh hell yes, how brutesquad.
24. Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer? Mcflurry cup, wendy's cup and a bottle of pop on my desk. I'd say a big ole fat yes.
25. What do you normally eat for a meal? Bad.
26. What type of snacks do you eat? Bad snacks
27. In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing? Nothing right now looking to start running (10k a week)

Congrats on turning the corner.

I don't think you and I are too different in our goals. I am also 6'4 and started at 314lbs three weeks ago (currently 304 as of last sunday and hoping to be under 300 when I weigh in on Sunday). I'm targeting 275 by August and 250 by December.

I know you might not want to hear this, but I think diet's, especially crash diets, are just going to set you up for failure. You mentioned that 2lbs/week was reasonable but your planning on doing a diet that cuts your calories way below what is necessary for 2lbs/week.

I calculated my basic needs to be about 3500calories/day. I am eating about 2200-2400 calories/day which is more than enough to keep me from feeling hungary (check out my diary if you want for my daily meals) this alone should add up to about 2lbs/week, on top I am running/jogging (10min/mile) 5km 4 times per week and walking 4kms 3 days/week which should = about another 2400-3000calories/week or an additional 1lb per week.

I lost 5.5lbs in week 1 and 4.4lbs in week 2, it seems to be working and I think it's something I can keep up.

Everytime I've tried to follow a "strict" diet, I've rebounded back higher that before I started.

Good Luck, I hope to hear about your journey.

I just averaged it for the whole year. I expect to lose massive amounts of weight in the first 2 months.

I know I could simply eat 1000 calories below maintance each day and exersise and lose 2lbs a week. I am fat, I have been fat pretty much my whole life. I want to see my belt go in 2 or 3 notches in the next 2 months. I want to lose a shirt size.

I don't plan to eat 2000+ below maintance forever but for the first little bit I can handle and it will teach me how to handle food properly.

Congrats, I will be following your journal and hopefully we can motivate each other.

This is all one big life style change, In the past I was not living a healthy lifestyle, I am training myself for the future and a little bootcamp has never hurt anyone. :)

I know my method may not be for everyone but I need a drastic change or my ways wont change because it's always has been ok to be fat.

Hi Brutesquad!
First I just wanted to say congrats for joining up to the Forum and here you will find plenty of support.
It's wonderful to see you taking accountability for yourself despite the kind of family you come from, and I can totally relate! Most of my family are also overweight and grappling with an array of health concerns. But that's what happens when communication in a family = Food!
I am glad that you want to be different though and start looking after yourself. That's really something to be proud of and I'll also be following your journey.
No matter what, at the end of the day keep your eye on the prize! :)
Talk soon.

Hey there :) You seem really motivated, and I bet you will do AWESOME! I would suggest not doing too crazy of a diet, I did when I was 14 and I did drop weight really fast but it was at the sake of my health. In reality dropping weight too quickly is VERY bad for your heart, and not to mention I gained ALL the weight I lost (30 pounds in a month) back plus another 40 pounds.

I am doing the south beach diet, it is more of a life style then a diet. But, you could lose the same amount of weight eating healthy everyday and having one day where you just let your calories slide a bit. Kara one of the moderators has said she has done this from day one in her journey and she has lost a lot of weight. On top of that if you give your body a jolt of higher calories then it makes it easier to maintain constant losses each week.

Anyway, whatever you do please make sure it is healthy. I have witnessed first hand how awful crash dieting can be for you and now I suffer from not only weight loss but also depression. I am looking forward to seeing your progress :)

Sounds like you have your plan together, I'll follow along on your journey.

Thanks gasman, I encourage all thoughts and encouragement.

Yeah my family has always been big, proud of food types. I remember most family events weren't about the presents but the food and the interaction while we stuffed out faces.

My girlfriend and I have been together for a year and we have gotten a little bit "comfortable" we know we need to change our lifestyles and there is no better time than now. We can account on each other.

I won't be doing anything too crazy, I will be listening to my body throughout this transformation. I have all the resources on nutrion and exersise.

I have a pretty obsessive personality so it doesn't surprise me that I have such high goals, I have always been like that. I won't be setting myself up for failure if I will eat to what I feel my body is telling me and for the first 4 weeks i'll do 'intense' workouts 3x a week (after my 4-1am shifts at work). I use it to wind down.

The goal for the rest of main is bed before 4am, and not sleeping in past noon.

I work 12-9 tomorrow which doesn't allow me to go to the gym but I will be back Monday for 3 days in a row that will kick my butt.

p.s. After my workout last Wednesday I was on the scale technically, I was registering past 350 so probably this Wednesday I'll be below it. After that I'm not going to weigh myself for awhile because I don't really want to see daily numbers unlike my gf.

anyways im rambling which I tend to do, if you've made it this far wow! thanks.

I totally know what you mean by the getting "comfortable" with your mate. Me and my fiance just celebrated our 6 year anniversary, haha when we started dating I was 125 and am now 170... love is good for the soul, but bad for the waistline!

gasman might be laughing but I think I am going to do less crash than anticipated.

You have a BMR of 3056.2
# If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375

With that my calorie to maintain would be 4202.275

I can eat up to 2700 calories and lose 3lbs a week!

Today I just printed off a food journal that I am going to start to use. I will be signing up with a calorie count type website dailyplate or similar soon.

I will continue to work out on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

I think I am going to buy a foodscale as well.

Anyways just a bunch of random thoughts. but the goals are simple.

(1) Eat when hungry, and eat reasonably
(2) Eat adequate protein (1g/lb lean body mass)
(3) Remove as much processed food from the diet as possible
(4) Train intelligently and avoid being sedentary if possible
(5) Supply adequate nutrients around training
(6) Make sure you are recovering reasonably and getting good sleep.

I have a spreadsheet that I am going to update weekly.

Ooh joining a calorie counting website and having a food scale has made ALL the difference for me!
I highly reccomend CalorieKing.com it's free and provides really cool features like nutirent breakdowns, shopping lists, graphs etc...
Plus it has this nifty little progress bar down the bottom that shows you how your calories are progressing throughout the day and keeping an eye on it ensures, I rarely go over. It's cool! :)

Well I made a fitday account.

I made most of it public viewing as this is completley anon so who cares.

I will start using this site religiously soon. I looked at ebay and it looks like I can get a food scale for ~$10.

I also have applied for two jobs that I hope I can get an interview for. I currently work at a call center and am sitting 9 hours a day I have applied for a couple of positions working front desk at a hotel so that would keep me more active daily.

My sleep schedule is also mega messed up its 530am and I am wide awake and forcing myself to go to bed. 4-1am shift SUCKS.

I hope to whoever, that I get a phone call tomorrow.

Hey it looks like you have thought this through very well. You seem to be a sort of a verbal individual that likes to talk about what you do out loud. I am sort of the opposite. I usually talk about what I do only after I have completed what I say I can do.

The one thing I want to tell you is, rather than thinking that you have to do all of this stuff, make sure that you keep your food program "in bounds." Nobody (even your girlfriends), the gym, support from others is going to be a replacement for keeping the energy balance in favor of burning fat. That has to be your only priority. Everything else is additional.

I really applaud how well you have thought this out......but now, do it.

:), I have been slowly transitioning into a better lifestyle. I really really want to be healthy. I thought a crash attempt was the best idea after reading Lyle's website. A big guy like me can't just cut to 800-1000 calories, I like my food a little too much right now and thats ok, my body will slowly get used to smaller and smaller protions.

The goal right now is to have a deficit of atleast 10,500 calories a week but that is still allowing me ~2500+ calories every day. I will slowly taper down.

We are looking around for a food scale and today is pay day I may go looking for one.

Once I have my foodscale I will have my paper food journal + my fitday account and I will really be able to get things into motion.

I also tried some 1% low fat choc milk and it was delicious I think that will be my post-workout drink for a bit.

I have also been testing myself at work to drink TONS of water.

Awesome plan.

It sounds like you have set up something that will be sustainable. I'm eating around the same (2200-2500 cal/day) I've coupled that with a little exercise (4 slow jogs/week and 3 walks/week) and the pounds are flying off (to the tune of 5lbs/week for the past three weeks).

As for the chocolate milk, that's my fav post workout drink as well, it's so delicious and satisfying, After I finish a 5k run I usually have a glass (2cups)

Good Luck,

Are you going to weight daily/weekly/monthly?

I have fiddled with mapmyrun a bunch and have created a couple of awesome run's that I plan on doing.

Loving all of these websites. I have such an addictive personalty I am constantly on them looking up info.

Going to be weighing in once a week. I feel like I will be offically on the scale when I wiegh in this upcoming Sun/Mon.

My gf and I also took down our measurements. We are going to take our measurements again on June 1 and then July 1.

Neck: 18"
Bicep: 17"
Forearm: 13"
Chest: 52.5"
Waist: 55"
Hips: 58"
Thigh: 33"
Calf: 22"

Looking to go for a jog atleast 4 times a week.

Today at 04:20 AM. Reason: added measurements

I laugh, that reminds me, starting to cut down on this as well. It's getting expensive and it's just making me lathargic. I mean I think I will always be an occasional toker but to the clip that my gf and I have been smoking it has been getting costly.

Lost my grandfather yesterday. I was named after him. What a great man.

I am struggling a little but right now but will get back on it once life unpauses.

:) Brute

Sorry to hear about your grandpa, It's always hard to lose someone close.

Let us know how the runs go.

It's been over a week since his passing. I have ate terrible and really have not been exersising.

I am putting a stop to it. No more fast food for the next week. I am also going to start a running goal.

Going to update my second post with some before pics w/ shirt on. I took shirtless pics but those are brutesquad (brutal lol).

edit- also looks like I probably won't get that night auditor position. It sucks that I can't get a break into an entry level hotel position. Stupid bilingualism. Oh well 1 more year till my GF is done here BA and we can move.
