Obesity - What Can The ~Government~ Do?

I think the only thing the Government should force is nutritional information is Restaurants. Fast Food company's already do it and once I found out an Individual Pizza at Uno's had 3 servings at 750 cals/ serving I stopped eating there.

That would be hard for a lot of non-chain restaurants to do, since a lot of chefs do everything by what "seems right".

nutrition info has been on product packaging for years... hasn't stopped people from eating an entire half gallon of ice cream in one sitting..

it might have worked for you -because you are now more aware... others need to come ot an awareness... and the government can't do that for people - they need to decide ofr themselves to use the information.

That's true but I still think it can have an impact. Recently I think people are beginning to realize there is a problem in America with obesity. I have seen lines at the Krispy Creme by me shrink to the point where they had to shut down stores. Those people who eat an entire gallon of ice cream probably don't even read the nut. info but when it's right on the menu I think they'll notice how much fat and calories they are really eating. I know I did.

Also I don't think it's fair that Fast Food chains are forced while others restaurants don't. And I don't think it's a problem with changing recipes to taste by the chef. I mean how much of difference is there in each Baked Zitti from your local Italian restaurant?

I'm not a chef, I just would love to be one when I grow up - if I ever grow up :)

a chain restaurant - the cook isn't really a chef -they follow a specific recipe with specific ingredients given to them by the home office... in a real restaurant -the chef is given free reign to do what he/she wants - and calculating the nutrition info would be near impossible because getting a chef to measure everything and follow a recipe would be a huge challenge.. if I were a chef I wouldn't want to.

Plus real restaurants the menu/specials change frequently... it costs a lot of money to have the nutrition info calculated...

There's a book I've mentioned a few times, called Mindless Eating, and the book mentions a study where people ate at subway vs mcdonadls -subway where the nutrition info is printed on the napkins and soda cups so super easy accessilbe.. because they have nutrition ifo available -people think they are eating healthier and will often add on a cookie/chips/ full sugar pop just because they think it's healthier - and end up spending more calories had they gone to mcdonalds.

Uno's thin crust indiviudual pizza has 3 servings at 220 calories each serving... Total Pizza = 660, not too shabby. I usually go there, eat half the pizza, and bowl of veggie soup at 120 and maybe some salsa mango chicken (280 calories) with steamed (no butter or phase) brocolli (maybe another 50 calories)

330 + 120 + 280 + 50 = 830, if I have enough calories left in the day, that is what I eat, if not, I cut out the soup or less pizza. I mean it's all workable, I love uno's due to the nutritional information, just need to be mindful.
