Nutrition

For those who work in the hospital or are nutritionist, I want to be one as well, of course I have to go to school to become one I am on my way. But is there any sort of job I can do now that realtes to it or that would help me understand the field more? If any one has any ideas about it please let me know thanks.

My wife is a dietary technician at a heart hospital. 2 years to complete the program.
Basically, without takign the classes and getting certified, you won't be able to land a job doing exactly what they do.
They have people called expediters where she works, who basically take the orders, prep the food, and take it to the patient. My wife is responsible for making sure what the patient orders is allowed by the diet order prescribed by the doctor. She also educates them after their heart surgery on what to eat, etc.

Basically she has half the training of a dietician. She could go to a 4 year school for 2 more years to take all the chemistry classes and deeper nutrition classes to get that degree.

When they are short on diet techs, they let this one expediter who is going to school to be a diet tech fill in for the evening.

Its not quite the answer you were after, but its what I have to offer.

Well thats cool and best of luck to your wife in the field. But honestly I want to go to a 4year college but do something in the hospital for the mean time I just don't know where I would fit in. Also I know hospitals are crazy because they always so hectic but I don't want to feel overwelmed and screw up in the postition that they give me. Damn I wish this wasn't so difficult a decision. I mean I am 110% I want to be a dietician/nutritionist but I just want to work in the hospital to get a feel on how things are in the medical field and how the show works. It may sound weird what I say cause I feel very strongly on this matter so if no one understands what I said don't reply.

A dietician or nutritionist doesn't seem like the most stressful job, not like an EMT or tramua surgeon. You can check with your hospital or something if they have a job shadowing program, or if anything, you can go into contact with a dietician and trade thoughts with them. If you're so sure you want to do it and just want to get a feel for the job, lol, hang out in an office or work as a clerk. Also, once you're a nutritionist, you don't have to work in a hospital, you can work out of a private facility, like a clinic. But again, if you want to get in a hospital to get a feel around, there should be a community program that will help you do that. Good luck.

for me I just started reading about it 2-8 houres a day every day for several years, so I have a little over 1500-2000 houres of just reading/study and that was a few years ago. the very first place I started was, howstuffworks.com, pubmed, emedicine, and various forums just like this one. infact im still learning since Ive seem to have run our of things to read about on my origional topic and have no idea what questions to ask I just rome around answering questions, and find questions I don't remeber or know the answer to so I can look it up so in turn I find more to read up on. good luck o and one important thing to know is that, studies are not always correct or others that say it's fact this includes pro's, doctors, the mass's, everyone.

I checked with my wife. No chance at getting a 'real' job until you have your degree, but maybe they'll let you shadow like LieYun suggested.

And my wife plans to finish at a 4 year school. diet tech is a nice quick 2 year program that got her a nice paying job at a 'for profit' hospital so that she can afford 2 more years of dietician courses at the University. For part of her time in the 2 year program she had a non-paying internship...if you can make contacts at a hospital you might be able to intern there and get even more experience.

Thanks alot this is really helpfulful. I am going to go do some reasearch right now. About five mins ago I called like five nutritionist offices and asked to speak to some doctors about their field and asked for insite and inquires about the nurtion field. Thanks again guys.
