Nutri-Grain bars

Are Nutri-Grain bars good when trying to loose weight? I usually eat them for a snack usually when I'm bored of the apple or banana, but I noticed there are quite a bit of carbs in there. Should I opt for something higher in protein? Like cottage cheese, or anything else that anyone can name that can be used for a good snack? Thanks!

I actually bought one a few months ago and after my first bite looked at the ingredients, and stopped the car and put it in a trash can.

I lol'd.

Yes, all nutra-grain related products seem to have quite a bit of simple carbs (sugar), and I honestly for the life of me cannot figure out why, because they usually have quite a lot of different supplements - protein, calcium, various vitamins & minerals, so I really ask myself, why do they have to stuff it all up by putting too much sugar in?

Anyway, I still eat nutra-grain cereal in the morning because I go for a walk to school, so eating sugar prior to exercise isn't such a bad thing.

But the thing about their bars (as is with cereal), is that they are made to be eaten during or right before hard exercise.

Sugar isn't all bad, if you use it there and then, then it won't be stored as far.

So it's good for exercise, but certainly horrible for losing weight.

NutriGrains (& others like them) aren't the health food they are made out to be.

That being said, they can be used as somewhat of a "stepping stone" in my opinion. If you are used to eating candy bars, chips, and Little Debbie cakes, then yes, NG bars are better and can help you transition into eating better.

But, only as a transitional tool while you are adjusting your habits, not as a permanent fixture in your diet. Yeah, some people are able to eat nothing but pure, organic, unprocessed, whole foods 24/7, but most need a bit of cushioning as we adjust to a new lifestyle.

They're healthier in the sense they're not quite as bad for you as a chocolate bar, but there are better alternatives - some of those already listed in the thread, and you can make your own bars from whole unprocessed foods.
