Not sure

Okay, well I would just follow the many guides I've found here already, but for me it's a bit different.

I'm 15, around 5'10", and I weigh around 158 pounds. I've been overweight since I can remember and I hate looking at baby pictures because of it. I may not count as overweight being as tall as I am, but I have a fairly large gut I would love to get rid of. Being so young, I can't really choose what I eat and how much I workout because my mom is busy. School starts in less than a month and I'd really like to lose around 5 or 10 pounds. It was my goal to lose some weight over the summer, and I would always refuse snacks and sweets, allowing myself maybe one a week. I can control my eating habits if I had healthy food.

So, with that being said, anyone know how I could lose this gut anytime soon?

Hey, welcom to the forum

You're right, you dont count as overweight really, but your probably lacking muscle mass. Alright down to the gut. You say you want to lose 5-10 lbs. To do that you have to go on a diet and follow it religiously.

First, go and google BMR (Base Metabolic Rate), which is simply the amount of calories your body needs to stay alive and workin' for the day.

Say you need 3500 (just a random number I made up) cals a day to stay movin.....well what you need to do is take the number you need, 3500, and subtract about 500 cals a day. 500 cals a day is 3500cals a week which guess what....equals one pound. So at this rate you should be losing 1 lb a week.

Aside from your diet, you need to set a workout schedule. To get rid of your gut, you need to do alot of core work (crunches, russian twists, lat crunches, ect. ect. ect.) Aside from these, many other excercises can help your abs, Deadlift, squat ect.

One of the most important things you can do during this time is cardio work. Get your heart pumpin at 150-190 BPM and you start burning cals like a catalyst!!! Do alot of running and anything else that gets your heart pounding.

Hope it helps, and if someone else has anything to add or change, thasts cool too.

Okay thank you both, I have looked at what you have to say and I have another question.

Counting my carb intake would be a bit hard for me, so I think the best thing is to find one or two foods that give me everything I need and I can eat maybe 4 or 5 servings a day of that and not much of anything else. I believe i could follow that if the food didn't taste that bad. Anyone know of some health bar or cereal like that?

You need diversity in your diet to make sure that you are getting everything that you need. You should check out

Even though your mum is busy you can still cook for yourself man, maybe ask for a food allowance? I cooked all my own meals at your age and it has helped me out a tonne later in life.

Not being able to choose what you eat or how long you workout for are mere excuses. If you're serious about this, you will let nothing get in your way. All you truly need for exercise is your own body - you can jog for cardio and use your own body weight for weight training. As for eating, you can learn to cook some basic meals - when I cook chicken breast, it takes about 48 seconds of actual preparation time. I sprinkle some garlic, onion, and steak spice over it. Pop it in the oven until its cooked (unless you enjoy salmonella) and bam. You don't need to cook overly complex meals or gourmet dishes. Even a sandwich made with whole grain bread and turkey or chicken slices is simple to make and will fit into your diet perfectly. Crack some eggs and make an omelette - again, very little preparation required.

You can't eat the same meal or two, 4-5 times a day, every day. If you educate yourself you'll find a multitude of foods available to eat, all which require little or no cooking.

Losing weight requires some serious sacrafices, including food, time, and sometimes money. Often, the problems people encounter when losing weight are just sacrafices they're unwilling to make. Make no excuses.
