Not quite a first timer

Hello all.....

First day of the rest of my life. I'm new to this site, but certainly not new to weightloss. I have dieted most of my life and have been moderately successful at times, but I'm looking to get serious. I'm actually really motivated right now.....one of my close girlfriends had gastric bypass last year at this time and has lost 150lbs. She looks great and has more confidence then ever. I'm not exactly in a range that would qualify me for surgery, not that I would go that route anyway, but seeing her makes me want to get healthy myself.

I have a four month old and a two and a half year old. I think my biggest goal is to gain more energy so they can be brought up in a more active household. If there's one thing that I don't want, it's obese, sendentary children.

So...day one...I'm 198 lbs, and looking two make it to between 150 and 160 pounds. Who knows how I'll feel after that, but baby steps right?? I'm going to sign up for weight watchers next week and get into a walking routine. I'm glad to find a place to chat.

I def. can't spend another day like yesterday....my two year old is sick and she's unbearable (sp?). We've been cooped up in the house for the last three days and I am LITERALLY going crazy. So, she's still sick, but we'll be finding something to do today.

Plan...

Get paycheck, hopefully.....first I have to scrap up $10 in change in order to get enough gas to get to my paycheck!!

Next, find a birthday present for my hubby......hope he's not looking for anything too exciting.

Finally....groceries.

I think the hardest thing for me in terms of staying on track with healthy eating is my financial situation. It's so hard to eat healthy on such a limited budget. Fruits and veggies are through the roof during the winter, and that's such a hard time to get through anyway. I'm so glad that produce stands are open now, I'm looking forward to some fresh fruit!!

Anyone eat fresh farm eggs?? Do they taste different?? I've heard they're lower in cholesteral.....is that true?

Hopefully we'll get a longwalk to the park in before the end of the day.

You may be surprised on the grocery bill. Lowering portion sizes and cutting out the junk takes a good chunk out. Make a menu and buy only what you need for the menu. Be sure and get some healthy snack items. Get something rewarding to. Especially in the beginning that will help you get through some days. I like the sugar free jello pudding but there are plenty others out there.

I sometimes eat farm eggs. I'm not sure about the cholesterol but if you read any info that is less than 10 years old you will find that eggs got a pretty bad rap on that anyway. Your cholesterol is going to improve so much from a new, healthier diet that I don't think the eggs will make a difference. I buy them because they are from a local farmer that I choose to support.

I can only imagine how expensive it is buying for a whole family! My groceries were $125 on Saturday, just for me alone. I did buy a few cleaning supplies, and ten cans of catfood, but geesh!

I’m not sure about fresh eggs. Apparently they are the “in” thing now. My Ex Husband owns the land across from me, and he has a cornfield and small coop off in the distance. Roosters roaming around, it’s quite rustic, lol. They are just starting to get their eggs, and plan to sell them. I’ll try some and let you know how they taste.

Anyway best of luck to you. I’ve also dieted on and off since high school days. Not always healthily. I hope to do better once and for all this time around!

Colleen

Thanks for the input!! I'll let you know how the egg thing goes....I might even do a taste test and cook one of each to see if I can tell the difference.

Up late tonight......can't sleep. Usually not a problem, but lately when I have a lot on my mind I stare at the ceiling instead of sleeping. I figure if I spend an hour or so surfing maybe I'll get tired again.

My day went really well actually.....got paid!!! Couldn't believe how much it rained though....it seemed like everytime I had to get out of the car it started to downpour.

Nothing too excited planned for today....I get to tutor and spend the day with the hubby. Maybe we'll take the kids to the park. Definitely need to bring the dog for a walk!!

Welcome!
You've come to the right forum, and there are some pretty nice people around here (I'm a newbie to here as well pretty much).

Run, dont walk to the nerest farmers market. It's saved us a ton of cash on the fruits and veggies, and you usually get better quality then the markets. One tip I've noticed is that you get better deals right when there closing up, and you can haggle more.

Rain, I wish we had that here. There talking about how it's going to be mandatory water conservation soon, and we could be in two year drought pattern. You'd think with all the vast resources we have as a nation we could figure out how to move around water to where it's needed, and away from where it's not. Sigh..

I'm still looking for something to replace my BBQ potato chips that I used to snack on at night, so if anyone runs accross something that dosent tast like cardboard (BBQ rice "Chips" for the yuck) let me know..

Oh and $125.00 for groceries, how I long for thoses days. My son (20 in collage) probally eats that in three days, and my daughter (14) is better, but there always seems to be two additional kids over at all times and food flys out the door. I think the last food bill was in the $500.00 range...Uggh..

you should ditch the car and buy decent rain coats and boots and walk i reckon.
Yeah ditching junk food etc makes the groceries cheaper. A friend of mine spends about $250 per week on groceries for 4 people (2 adults and 2 kids), and just doesnt understand how my family survives on under $150 a week for 6 (2 adults, 4 kids of which 2 are teens and eat like a horse!). But as soon as you open the cuboards hers are full of ice blocks and chippies and cookies and other garbage. Mine have enough stuff, often home baked as well, to last ONLY for morning teas and afternoon teas for the week. Often ill buy a 20 pack of those quick noodles for the kids which is a better option for after school anyway (or canned spaghetti).

If you dont buy it you wont eat it!

I've been wondering....I notice you on the bike....Liz right? Did you ride before you started losing weight, or was that a tool for you to lose it....or something you discovered later? I will walk, I don't mind it too much, I just get bored really easily. I'd love to try something different, and biking seems like a lot of work, but way more fun. I'm not sure how I'd feel riding around in public with my fat butt on one of those tiny seats, though!!! I have my old bike from when I was in high school....enough to get me started and maybe if I like it, I can look into getting a decent one.

Any advice?

BTW......LOVE BBQ anything!! Not so sure you can replace that taste.......I'll think about it though.

I've been riding my mt bike for a few months now and I do love it but with a six year old tagging along its a bit inconvenient at times. His little legs arnt' that long yet so he rides his bike at a snails pace. When I'm riding alone I can usually get places just as fast as with a car. I've got a big butt too, but that hasn't kept me from riding...high gas prices have motivated me to peddle more often too.

I'm going to get my old bike from high school this week and get a tune up....we'll see how it goes. Love that my husband thinks the prospect of me on a bike is hilarious!! I'm really hoping its fun though.....I'd love to be able to ride places and save on gas, but with two little ones, I'm not sure how often I'll be biking since they're almost always with me. Once school is back in September, my husband works nights, so I will have to get a sitter to exercise!!! Can you believe that. Actually, the YMCA up the street has free day care when your working out, so I should probably join, again.

I haven't been doing so hot on the diet front......going on vacation next week, so I have it in my mind that I'll suck next week anyway. Tough to get motivated when you're out to eat for every meal.

Bought my farm fresh eggs today.....I'll be giving them a try in the morning. I'm totally paranoid that I'll crack one open to find a partially formed chic in there....ewwww!

Well, will check in later this week.

I started on an old dunger mountain bike, then an older crappy road bike, then a really nice fancy road bike eventually working my way up :)
Nothing wrong with BBQ at all! in fact i eat it all the time. Its the deep fried stuff thats the problem! BBQ is one of the healthyest options.

Well.....I've been prepping for the 5K deal....I've walked every night this week....only about a half hour or so, but enough to get started. Its nice to get out of the house and get some quiet. I'm prepping my dog as well, the poor thing was dragging behind me halfway through. I think we'll both be better once we get this moving. I think I'll start day one on sunday, then tuesday night....day three will need to be while we're on vacation. Not sure how I'm going to work it, we'll be at old orchard in maine...all set with jogging on the boardwalk, so I might take a drive to some side road areas and go from there.

I figure I can do the baby step thing. Move more and eat less....I'll eventually work in the gym for strength training and start really making bigger changing in the food we eat. One step at a time though.

I tried the eggs today....they def. do taste different. More flavorful and they fluffed up better, quicker.

Tried the kashi protein and fiber bars today. They were recommended to me....we'll see. I had the chocolate peanut roll.....pretty good. Love their cookies....dark chocolate oatmeal. YUM....I am a fanatic about my oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.....and I like them. Their frozen meals are good too. Alright, too much about Kashi....

ciao
