Not overly muscular but strong and healthy

I'm not really trying to get super muscular or super lean. All I'm trying to do is become more healthy "overall". So I'm really not looking for supplements to make muscle grow.. but rather just things that are good for things that are often neglected.. like the heart and THE MIND (etc).

I went to the local supermarket and I saw a bunch of Vitamins and supplements.. however I have no idea what brand is good and what really is actually recommended and has really no bad side effects (some weren't really FDA approved or w/e). I saw a bunch of omega/flax oil/ etc etc which I really dont know much about except that they are "good for you".

I am in college and while my budget is not that large I am willing to spend some money on this because I think it is actually something worth doing.

Also, in place of coffee I have heard great things about Yerba Mate so I want to try that.. if you guys could point me to a good retailer please let me know.

First off congratulations in deciding to better yourself.

Second, don't waste your money on supplements. I don't know why every time someone says, "I'm going to live healthier by buying supplements." It really shows that American (as well as European) companies really gotten a good grasp on the market with bogus description.

Third, if you really feel that supplements are a thing you *must* take, then get multivitamins and fiber since you really can't go wrong with those. I only take three types of supplements: multi, fiber, and whey protein. The last two, fiber and whey, I probably only take some of the times when I feel I'm not getting enough protein or fiber. I never take it in hopes that I will gain anything out of it with the exception that I will benefit with the needed supply of the day. On days where I don't feel like I'm having good "movements" I take fiber, and on days where I feel I'm bloated a bit, I stop. With Whey Protein, I take it when I feel I really worked out hard at the gym with weights, and now I need protein to help my body because I'm running low on high protein stuff in the house like chicken, salmon, yogurt, cottage cheese, and those stuff.

The secret to living healthy is to: eat a variety of food in moderation, and get up and do something. It's no secret that healthy people simply are active people. By eating a variety of food and being active you burn calories and insure that you get all the necessary things your body requires. They don't go spend hours at the gym, nor do they take crazy supplements all week long. Watch their behavior: instead of taking the elevator, they walk the stairs; instead of eating salad at dinner parties, they pick up a little bit of everything; instead of sitting down watching tv after dinner, they do house work or walk around the block; instead of doing things they hate for exercise, they do things they like and they keep doing it without feeling guilty that they're not doing enough.

Hey, I don't drink either on a regular basis. Coffee, maybe once a year, if even that.

For tea, I usually drink green tea. I find the organic ones better than those commercial ones.

Both are 0 calories (I know green tea provides 0 calories, but I always get confused with coffee, but I'm sure it's 0 calories too), and provide caffeine; 0 calories as long as you are not adding anything.

I drink green tea not because of the health benefits. I just like the taste, and it makes me warm. Of course, drinking tea all day long and drinking coffee will provide you with 0 benefits, and many trips to the bathroom. I say stick with water or drink whatever you like in moderation. I wouldn't even worry about the whole "benefits" of coffee or green tea. Just focus on getting more exercises in and just trying your best to change your eating habits to a healthy one while keeping in mind of moderation and variety.

I agree that ocassional tea or coffee is god fer ya as long as you don't put no sugar. Eat healthy food as Dallen said and you will have little need for expensive "brand name" supplements.
