Not hitting calorie target - what will happen??

Hi all,

I've been calorie counting for a few weeks now and I'm finding that a lot if days I'm finding it hard to hit my minimum calorie intake.

I am aiming for 1200 cals a day and most of the time am not getting over 1000.

What will happen if I eat less than what is recommended for me? Should I be topping it up to get to the figure?

Check your diet to see whether you eat the right food. If you eat the right food it shouldnt be too difficult to reach 1200 calories. Personally, I would top it up to 1200 calories and see what happens with your weight.

Eating way below target will starve your body, essentially. If your diet isn't healthy, you won't get all the nutrition your body needs. It won't have enough energy to function at its best, likely leaving you feel tired, moody, fatigued.

Eating too little will also hinder your weight-loss, since your metabolism will adapt to not getting enough energy, and slow down, burning less and less calories, thus making it more and more difficult to lose weight.

I'd really check into what you are eating. For a half way healthy diet, 1200 calories should be no problem whatsoever.

I'm sorry, but you're finding it hard to hit your minimum calorie intake? It's not hard to eat. Hell, we're on a weight loss forum - we know this to be a fact, HAHAHA.

To solve your problem - eat more. It's not hard. That's how we all got here in the first place.

More than minimum calories, if you're eating as little as you describe, I'd watch protein. I'm not sure how much you weight, but I'm going to guess that unless you're 5 foot even and trying to lose the last 5 lbs to get down to 100 lbs, you should try for a minimum of 100 grams of protein a day.

What could happen if you don't? Muscle loss. Know what's made of muscle? Your heart. So, not to do scare tactics, but if you're eating less than 1000 calories a day, it had better be plenty of good quality protein, and you should probably be meeting with your doctor.

If you're that low at the end of the day, then you might consider something like a 200 calorie shake made from whey protein isolate to boost you up. Without knowing more about your diet, it's hard to give much more advice than that, but I hope that helps at least some.
