Not a vain question...

...but a vein question:

Since I began working out/lost weight I can really see the veins in my forearms sticking out. I'm wondering what the cause of this is. Is it because of a lower body fat percentage or more muscle? Why is it particularly my forearms?

Also, I noticed this week that this would come and go. I mean at certain times of the day they were visible and sticking out like braille, other time of the day I could barely see them. Anyone else have this? What's the cause? My guess is to do with water intake?

Its low bodyfat. Increased muscle can affect it, but its mostly a function of bodyfat.

The reason it "comes and goes" can be due to a lot of factors, including exertion, water intake (as you mentioned), and carb levels (part of the reasons pros carb up before a comp is for vascualrity).

My veins stick out in my forearms like a road map when training no matter the specificity of the muscle being trained. They really started to pop when my body fat lowered a great deal, and the skin thinned (or fat underneath disappeared).

I agree is really a function of low body fat and the genetic layout of the veins in the body.

Low body fat is the reason your veins became visible. It's a good sign. You can probably see them better after exerting yourself right? As the blood pumps harder the veins 'pop'. The water in your body also affects their visibility. Being low on water brings out definition and veins, being hydrated hides your lines and veins.

It's a good thing and the ladies dig veins.

My lady doesnt dig the veins, but I have the brain chains to take the reigns to remove her verbal incorrect stains, and thus chillen's veins maintain in his campaign.

I also learned that once the body fat is low (sub 9%) (at least with me), and being in a deficit for a certain length of period, and then I revert to eating over maintenance (say +300), I have a feeling of being more lean than the day before if I keep carbs at the normal ratio for myself (which can vary, and I also go against the grain on this as well). I have learned that if my carbs are lower, and I drink alot of water, my veins are much more visible. In contrast, if my carbs are UP, and I drink alot of water, I tend to puff when drinking alot of water. But this is just me. So, if Im in the mood to really have the abs pop or bring out definition (for me) (more than they do), I lower my carb intake and increase water. But this is with me, and how my body reacts.

And, yes, in most cases its a function of low body fat.

YEp lowering bad fat will expose them, but as you pointed out that isnt the only thing because it comes and goes. If you go for run youll notice them because the arterioles are dilating and hence theres a pooling of blood in the veins, although the body attempts to return this blood by valves, venoconstriction, muscle pumping etc... The veins are more superficially prominent and less fascia, muscles etc so thats probably why they're more in your arms, nothing to worry about though..
