Hello everyone,

I'm new here and looking to loose 25 pounds I've been carrying with me for too long.

I'm 19, and for the past few years I've been pretty active, I've got a husky who hates watching TV :p I really haven't gained very much weight since I was about 14 or so(I was over weight as a child), but I find it tricky to loose any weight at all, I suppose if it was easy we'd all be super models. I think my biggest problem is my diet, I've never paid much attention to it until recently when I realised it wasn't very healthy. I'll go a day or two without eating anything, and then spend a day where I eat nothing but junk food.

I'm hoping if I clean up the way I eat, and exercise more than I do right now, that I'll be able to loose some weight. :)

Also, from reading posts on this site I'm really impressed with how well everyone seems to be doing. Growing up when I thought about people loosing weight I thought about people saying they were going to loose weight, but then never doing anything to actually loose weight. The task seemed so daunting I wasn't really sure if loosing the weight I have would be possible. It's so encouraging just reading about how people are really succeeding, and thinking, hey! I bet I can too! So I am determined to lead a healthier life style.

good on you for deciding to do.

You have a great companion for going for runs with i see - there is another user whom has a husky also and used it like that.

Good luck on your journey :)

just wanted to say hi,and wish you the best of luck on your weight loss journey...there are some seriouse inspirational people on here, I know it helps me to read their stories!

Ivans a beaut also - bi-eyed . I lost over 50 pounds since Wolfy came into my life, but it wasn't all through exercise with him. It also involved lots of clean eating, calorie cutting, and some exercise on my own - a whole lifestyle change. However, Wolfy did provide the impetus for that change, and the dog-exercising alone, does a lot to keep the weight off. We have an unwritten contract to keep each other fit :)

Do you exercise Ivan off leash, or rather ... can you (huskies are notorious runners)? I could with Wolfy up to the age of about 13 - 14 months, but then he got too husky, too wise and independent, and after I lost him in the forest a few times (although each time he made his own way home), I have had to call it a day to most .

Not a problem though, because we have three methods of on-leash exercising:
  • . Wolfy still enjoys a gentle walk on the leash - it gives him the chance to pick up his pee-mail from the local lampposts, sniff around for cats, meet other dogs etc. With summer coming, we are looking forward to some longer dog-hikes - must take water though.
  • . Until recently, we were doing this two or three times per week, between two and five miles a time. Equipment needed - a makes the job much better. They include a bungee length that absorbs some of those squirrel chasing moments. Its very different to running on your own, because the dog goes crazy for the first mile or so - forcing you to sprint for your life. Later in a run, he slows down, and you can slow to a jog. It is with its dangers - to your back, to running injuries, and to taking a fall :) It is however, addictive and enjoyable - its like running with the wolf.
  • . You need a reasonably safe (if its possible) dog-bicycle attachment. I use one called the 'Springer'. There are others such as the Walky-Dog, etc. Google for them. or I can send you a link for the Springer, which works well for us. Basically these attachments allow the dog to run beside the cycle, but not to pull in front of the wheel. When they see a cat/squirrel/rabbit, a spring, accompanied by a low centre of gravity, hopefully allows you to keep mounted, and to keep in control of the situation. The Springer comes with a safety lead that snaps if you wrap around a lamppost. However, they aren't really strong enough for a husky. I replaced mine with a solid neck-line, losing some safety, but not the dog. With a husky, its not a gentle walk - Wolfy loves to haul me on it - at speed around dirt tracks, and it can be a bit of a danger-sport.
An alternative is bike-joring, where you use a racing harness, a long lead, and a section of bungee attached to the handlebars of a bicycle. You train the dog to lead. But it is notoriously dangerous. A slightle safer alternative is dog-scootering. Pretty much the same as bike-joring, only instead of a bicycle, you buy a robust cross country kick-scooter. You have more chance of jumping off when the husky spots a deer than you have of safely dismounting the bicycle.

As for the nutrition - my advice is always, eat lots of veg, some fruit, keep your proteins lean (e.g. fish, beans, skinless poultry white meat), avoid processed foods - eat wholesome and natural. Don't eat fried foods, cut right back on saturated fats - but make sure that you get some good fats. Don't starve yourself, eat regular including a breakfast. Replace white carbs with wholegrain carbs (e.g white bread with wholemeal bread, white rice with brown rice). If you are going to track your nutrients or calorie count, then try . Don't cut your calories too far, don't aim to lose more than an average of 2 pounds per week.

Good luck!

Great advice thank you :D

I walk Ivan between 1 and 2 hours a day usually, in the woods behind our house. I also take him to the off-leash dog part near my house. It's a fenced in area about 10 acres where dogs are welcome to play and run around together. I used to rollerblade with him, until he pulled me down the driveway and onto the lawn across the street, been too nervous to try that one again. I jog with him sometimes, I usually go on my own though, he used to pull, but then got smart and decided since he's always panting by the end of the run, he might as well slack as much as he can. So I end up pulling him, which adds a lot of intensity to the workout.

I'm still trying to get my nutrition down. My dad always brings me groceries, and he's not a strong believer in healthy eating. The past 2 days:

breakfast: Kellogg's Guardian cereal with 2% milk
snack: banana
lunch: salami with cheese sandwich (whole wheat)
snack: pear
dinner: spicy terriaki noodles
snack: some carrots

All in all I got around 1500 calories, I meant to get in some leafy greens too but forgot. That was my most filling and healthy food day in a long time,

Looks like you are off to a great start...
I had to laugh about the rollerblading with the dog incident...I have two great danes and they both outweigh me...I wouldnt dream of going on rollerblades with them...And when I walk them they get tired after about one block and the oldest of the two just layes down...so there I am begging a 210 pound dog to at least get up and go towords home!
