Noobie Needs Direction

Sorry this may be a long post as I want to give as much info as possible.

I’m a 25 year old male, currently weigh about 105kgs (230 lbs).

History: I was extremely fit until about age 18, I played basketball at a high level and spent approx 20+ hours a week training and playing games. Once I turned 18 I stopped playing basketball and turned to drinking and general partying. My weight has maxed out at about 117kgs (260 lbs), I have managed to reduce it a little a number of time but never achieve my actual goal of about 85kgs (187 lbs).


Current situation: I have been going to gym and trying to eat more healthy for the past month, I have not weighed myself but am feeling better in general. I go to the gym 3-4 times a week, while at the gym I do 30mins of cardio normally on the cross trainer and aim to burn 400+ calories (don’t know how accurate those machine measurements are. I then do machine waits for my back, chest, arms, legs and stomach. I also play sport twice a week but it is not extremely high intensity as it more of a social thing, but it stops me going to the gym on those nights.

My diet is pretty consistent during the week. For breakfast I have an apple and banana, lunch is normally sushi or a 6 inch from subway (low fat chicken, avocado, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, no sauce) or a similar sandwich. Dinner is normally something like kangaroo/salmon with veggies or salad. However over the weekend I love a beer and this also affects what I eat, I’m trying to improve this.

Goals: Get back to 85kgs, look toned and fit, feel fit and have more energy.

Issues: I’m not sure if my current gym routine is best strategy to reach my goals? Do I need to change my diet more? I would like to be able to still have a few beers, is this possible while I’m trying to lose weight.

Sorry for the long post, thanks to anyone that reads it. And a huge thanks in advance to anyone who is able to give me some advice. Any direction would be great.
 
It sounds like you and are in about the same size bracket. I am 5'-9" and my goal is also 185-190lb. I have a very good basic frame and pumps up well. I was at 225 lb at the most this past December. Way more than I have ever weighed and wondered if I could ever lose weight again. I never had a problem with weight.

I also like beer. High calorie beer - Spaten Optimator, Chimay Cinq Cents, Rasputin Imperial Stout (200- 400 calories per 12 oz).

I decided to put some rules in play about beer and alcohol in general. Alcohol only on two nights per week. And I can never exceed daily calorie limits. I started dropping pounds. This week I have already lost 4 lbs since Monday.
