Noob nees help to lose weight....

Hi!

I need to lose weight! ehehe. I'm doing some martial arts specifically taekwondo, and I can't be good at it if I'm this heavy. Well, actually, I'm not thi heavy before, I gained wieght because I stopped practcing martial arts for 2 years, now I want to come back.

My current weight is 175 and my height is around 5'10

Could you give me tips for starters?

I've been doing some muscle training for the past two years, but no improvements, I was just able to maintain my weight at 180 but that's all. Since I came back to martial arts my weight dropped to 175 but I don't do martial arts to lose weight I need to lose wieght to be able to do martial arts nicely :)

Here are some of my questions....

1. Do you think I should stop my muslce training, and just focus on my cardio drills? I asked this because, I feel I'm becoming heavier and looking more bloated due to my muscle training

2. What's the best time to exercise? I'm a bit clueless about this, I get off work around 5:30pm and I'm pretty worn-out alredy after that. If I'm not that tired I'm able to exercise at around 10pm.

Search the forums a bit. You will find most people will tell you that you can lose weight and lift weights at the same time. That's because if you build more muscle, it requires more energy to keep it healthy, so you can burn more calories.

Best time to exercise? When you're most ready to hit the gym. Personally, I can't do it after a day's work (well, I could, but I wouldn't be fired up about it). Just before lunch is best for me.

You're obviously doing things wrong if you haven't gotten stronger in two years' training and you say you look bloated.

You need time when you are fresh to strength train. No point training when you're fatigued. Better to train one or two days a week when you're refreshed than when you're pooped. Also, you say you're doing martial arts too and your work fatigues you. :(

I personally find that doing strength training on days that I do not have a MA class (three days a week for me) works great. I run 5 days a week in the mornings, and though that would probably help you lose weight, I would say its entirely optional as a good strength training regime and TKD classes are probably more than enough to help you lose weight.

No! Tweak your routine towards gaining definition maybe, but strength training and external martial arts go together like peas and carrots.

Just a note- I recently started doing some Tae Chi exercises (not like the moving stuff, but its just standing still for a few minutes in different postures) with a friend who has been doing them for a long time after my runs and I believe it gives me more energy during the day. So some sort of morning exercise might help you get through your work day with more energy to spare afterwards.

Edit- <generalization> Even though losing weight may help you in your martial art, unless you are very heavy (which I do not believe you are) gaining flexibility and range of motion will affect a much greater increase on your ability. </generalization>

Woah! Is this true? I thought that it's somehow beneficial to train when fatigued since I'm increasing my endurance. There are times when I'm so tired that I fall asleep even while lifting dumbbells, oh well, another shocking truth for me

How about for food? I've been browsing through some of the threads and other sources and there seems to be tons of food to avoid when trying to lose weight, at the very least I think I should lessen my carbs.

I live in the Philippines (asia) so rice is our staple food, for now I've substituted rice with wheat bread. I only eat one cup of rice during lunch time. Please tell me I'm doing the right thing! ^_^

Well, honestly, how good of a workout can you be having if you're dozing off??? :p No, if you're falling asleep, go home and sleep. Being in the gym falling asleep will do you no good, prob get you injured if anything.

You live in the Phillipines and are taking TKD? How about we trade places and you can take TKD here and Ill go live there and do Escrima!
