No more excuses!

Hello :waving:

This is my first entry and I want to say that I am done making excuses when it comes to my weight loss. I have been on some medications for years that have caused me to gain weight. I am happy to say that I am off the medication for good, but have gained a lot of weight over the years. I am 5'2, twenty-eight years old and just hit 200 lbs! I know I have to do something and do it fast. I have beeing walking for about 2 hours a day each day and trying to watch what I eat. I have a long way to go, and I can afford to lose 100 pounds and weigh 100 pounds because I am so short. It was still be within reason and healthy for me to weight 100 pounds.

I want to do all this before I turn 30. I am technically 28 and a half. No more excuses.

Good for you and welcome. I've only been posting here a few days and have already learned a lot. Just out of curiosity, what's you plan so far?

Hello...thank you.

Well I dont have a plan yet..I was hoping to get a plan going after reading what people are doing on this board. I am just trying to watch what I eat and walk each day as a form of exercise.

Here is what I looked like 10 years ago when I was 18....I look much different and much more rounder now :(

The starting to walk thing was how I got going. It kind of put me on track so to speak. I didn't try to push myself at first, except to do it every day. I started that the end of December/beginning of January. It wasn't until I managed to walk every day...barring rain of course...that I decided on the next change. I'd never actually been in shape so after I managed to just walk for a month, I picked up the pace a little. By the end of February I went ahead and paid for a year at the gym up front, and about a month with a personal trainer. That was when I started trying to change my eating habits. I still haven't gotten the hang of that part yet though.

Eating Way Too Much!

Well today I stepped up my walking routine by walking up hills around my neighborhood. I have been walking almost each day, but I know that I have to step up my game. I hope this helps me burn more calories. I am also going to try to get the new Sketcher Shape-Up shoes because they are for walkers and they help you burn more calories.

On a different note...I realized today very clearly that I eat waaaaay too much at one time. I really need to watch my portions. I am used to over eating, so I have to cut back and let my stomach shrink. This is going to be hard, but I gotta do it. No more excuses!

Big Revelation!

Wow..I just had a big eye-opener!

I have never been a calorie counter. I always sort of thought that people who counted calories were sort of going overboard. Boy was I wrong. The basics of losing weight is calories in vs. calories out. Its that simple. I always thought that counting calories would be annoying etc....but if you are really serious about losing weight as I am, then you WILL do it.

By punching in some numbers I learned that I need around 2300 calories per day just to maintain my weight. In order to lose weight I need 1656 calories per day based on the exercise I am doing each week.

When I thought about this some more...I realized that there must have been sooooooooooo many days in my life, maybe even years that I ate more than 2300 calories per day. Think about it..if I was just eating 2300 calories I would maintain my current weight..but over the years I have gained like 10 lbs per year. So that means I must have been eating much more than 2300 calories per day! Thats insane, and I have to say that I am sooo ashamed. Everyone knows that you are not suppose to eat more than 2,000 calories per day for MOST people. I was eating waaaaaaaaaaaaay more than that.

So now that I know roughly how many calories I need to eat per day...I have to start counting. This morning I had two waffles with butter and syrup of course. I thought that was an okay break, not super good, but its not like it was McDonals or something. Well I was wrong. All that was 450 calories! Thats sort of a lot. The waffles were okay...for two its 210 calories. Not bad, but of course the syrup was 100 calories for a small amount, and the butter was about 60 calories per serving and I had 2 servings so thats 120 calories for both.

210+100+120= 430 Calories. But I also had a few sips of diet coke so I just figured I had 450 calories for breakfast! Thats nutz!!!! I can see I need to eat some oatmeal and fruit for breakfast from now on. Taking a look at exatly what I am eating is really going to force me to change what I eat. I need to make better choices.

Also I took a look at the liquids I had in my fridge. I have diet coke, lots of juices and water. I took a look at the calories in each serving of juice. Its like 100-120 calories in each serving of juice. Ive hear about the studies that said to watch what you drink because a lot of our calories are found in what we drink, specifically in juices that you think are healthy but are loaded with sugar. I have not really been a big water drinker, but this whole thing is making me open my eyes a lot and I am going to try ever harder to switch to drinking water and keep the sodas and the juices to a minimal. I always knew that drinking water was the best thing, but when you look at how many calories there are in each serving of juice, you see even more clearly.

I have to say that taking a look at my caloric in-take was really suprising. I must have been eating waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay waaaaaay, waaaay more than I needed to. Part of the problem was just like with the waffles, I had no idea how many calories I was eating per meal because I never counted calories before. Now that I am going to start, I think this is going to make a huge difference real fast.

Today by using fitday.com, I was able to count my nutritional values. Because I was aware of what I was eating, I didnt overeat and stuck with the plan. I had about 1400 calories. I know I am suppose to get 1656 calories, but today I had NO activity at all. I sat in front of the computer. I wont have time to get home and go for a walk, so I figured that 1400 calories for a non-active day is good. I had almost 60 grams of fat. That is actually a lot. I am suppose to have somewhere between 30-35 if I want to lose weight. So I need to watch that tomorrow. I had about 182 grams of carbs and most of those were the bad carbs. I need to work on that. I think 20-70 grams of carbs is what I need for weight loss. I also need more protein because even though I had 45 grams, I need about 60 grams for my height and weight. So I am off to a good start...I have some work to do, but this is the first day. I am happy. I hope I can become good at this and just come to know the nutritional values of each food over time without having to look it up, Im sure I will.

Total April 15, 2010

1,418 Calories

59.8 Fat Grams

181.9 Carbs

44.8 Protein

Great Day

Yesterday was a great day for exercise and nutrition. I did really well. Since I have been keeping track of what I eat, I know how many calories I have left each day. I hit my target for calories-in, but I still need to watch my fat in-take and carb in-take. Its hard to get the right balance...I guess thats why they say you need to "eat a balanced meal" each day.

Well the past 5 days have been really hard for me. I gained and lost 4 pounds. It could be water weight or something, but either way its weird. I am now at 201 lbs which is one pound more than when I started :(

I got a little discouraged about this, but I am not giving up. Someone told me perhaps is a little to do with muscle gain etc. I am not sure but I am back in the game now.

Don't get too discouraged......as long as you are counting your calories so you know how much you are taking in and exercising / working out, the weight wil come off......sometimes it may go up and down, but like you said, it can be things like water weight, muscle growth, etc.

Cheers!
