Hello, I am 28 years old and am around 230lbs. I am currently trying to lose weight to get into the Army. I have to reach a 34% or less body fat in order to join and currently I am around 39%. I went from 265lbs two months ago to 230lbs now. I need to lose at least 30 more lbs before the Army will take me. I joined to see if anyone had any good advice because I have been researching ways to lose weight fast and can not find much. Any advice would help. I think I have tried everything that has to do with pills and supplements so that is completely out of the question.
Currently I am taking in around 800 to 1000 calories per day. I eat five small things throughout the day so that I am not hungery. I run one mile three times a week and do my other workouts such as walking 4miles, pushups, setups, and weights twice a week. I usually take Sat and Sun off unless I have energy to walk the dog for a mile or two. Like I said if anyone can help I am all ears for the advice. Thank you

Hello April,

Congratulations on your 30+ loss! I admire you for wanting to join the Army. I'm way too big a chicken. I just joined this site myself, however, and have 70 lbs to lose. It sounds like your calorie intake is very low. The pros will tell you that our bodies tend to think we're being starved when calories drop too low. Then they hold on to the fat we have with all their might. Some of the old-timers on the site would probably be better at giving you more details and ideas.

I just read Steve's (I think it's Steve) thread on the Basics that had some really good information. You might want to check it out.

Keep it up!

Yea, I wouldn't listen to that Steve guy. He's a quack and a half! :p

So, to Aprilo:

Haven't you heard that starvation is NOT the way to losing weight? It always interests me when I still see people starving themselves when even the media doesn't push/promote that kind of dieting. If anything, it's the other way around and they do their one and only good deed by telling society that starvation = bad.

You said you already lost 35 lbs. Has that halted? Or are you still losing?

What's your 800 calories consist of?

You say you do weights twice per week. What does this consist of?

Immediate problems:

1. Your diet is god-awful. I don't care what foods you're eating.... your caloric level already warrants the title of "awful." And this, diet, is going to be your primary driver for success.

2. Too much emphasis on steady state cardio. Not enough emphasis on weights and interval training.

3. Short-term agenda. I know there is a goal on the other end of this short-term concentration... that being the Army. Still though, what happens after? Starvation dieting wreaks havoc on your body on many levels. Are you going to eat like this forever? If not, be prepared for a nasty weight gain.
