Newcomer needing help!

Hi guys,

Well, i'm 15 years old and I love to use the computer. Over the years, this has caused me to develop sort of a beer belly (i dont drink beer). I believe this is from the computer.

I am not fat neither super skinny, but my belly is the only thing that doesn't "fit" or relate to the proportions of my body.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a huge belly, but it's enough that it bothers me.

Anyway, i was hoping if there was something i could do to get rid of this. I must point out that I am extremely lazy but I do exercise and play sports competitively 4-5 times per week for over an hour every day.

I don't think that I need to lose weight, just lose this belly!

Any help to what I can do would be appreciated.
I heard that doing sit-ups does nothing as the muscle develops under the fat therefore not resulting in anything.

THanks :D

Hmmm... that's a toughie. Since you're only 15, it's a bit more complicated, since you are still growing. Some teens tend to store more fat, just prior to another growth spurt, so it's possible that your body could be preparing itself for that.

On the other hand... it could depend on your diet. No matter what your age, you should be watching your intake of too much sugar, too much refined flour, etc. I'm always hesitant to point younger people towards 'watching their diet' because there are too many out there that are overly obsessed with it, and have been on plenty of weird 'diets' by the time they reach your age.

So promise that you won't do anything drastic... but maybe take a look at your overall diet for 2-3 days and see if anything pops out at you.

You're right about sit ups... they will not help you lose belly fat (even though many, many advertisers will try to make it seem that way!)

Are there any activities or sports that you enjoy outside of your team sports?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, i will try to notice if there is something in my diet that could cause this. Don't worry, i'm not going to do anything drastic :p

About the sports, I play baseball everyday now for 1+ hours and tennis 3 times per week with each practice about 1 hr and 30 min.

Some Help and Something to think about!

It is true that at your age an obsession with diet may prove to unhealthy in the future.

Positive changes for you might be to keep track of obvious sugar sources like soda, desserts etc. and cut them out.

Exercise wise: baseball, although Americas favorite past time, can not really be called exercise. It is important to realize that muscle burns fat...so the quickest way to get rid of belly at any age is to increase your muscle.

At your age it takes very little time to gain muscle because your body is producing testosterone at an accelerated rate. So every 1/2 hour you spend on the computer, take a break and drop down and do as many push ups as you can.

As you get used to taking this little health breaks, add another exercise like body weight squats, sit ups, leg lifts, handstand pushups etc.

No, situps don't lean down your belly but they do hold it in tight and more importantly they build muscle!....which burns fat.

On a different note: A belief that you are very lazy is not a healthy belief for anyone especially a 15 year old, it is also completely incongruent with your goal of becoming fitter.

Change begins with awareness. You have identified a problem (your belly). You have said you want to be fitter...so you are aware that you need to do things differently. Try to change your internal dialogue.

Don't allow yourself to say that you are lazy...take no pride in this belief.
Remember there is not prize in being the smartest guy in the mental institution.

Change your beliefs by changing what you say about your self from this point forward.

Every time you do your exercises at your exercise break, tell yourself and say "I am an active and healthy person..full of energy and ready to face life fully!

What you believe to be true...will be true for you!!!!

Like some others have noted here, you're still growing. And I agree with the other advice given- take a look at your diet and your lifestyle. You noted you spend a lot of time on the computer- so maybe try to lessen your time with technology and why not try running or weight lifting? Competitive sports are great, but it's also nice to have something you can do on your own so that on weekends and vacations you have your own "fitness hobbies."
And you can definitely benefit by journalling what you eat for a few days and looking at what kind of junk foods are in your life. If you're at the computer and eating chips or cookies, then that might be a habit to break.

Welcome, Some good advice already given!

You can always exercise even your tummy, while setting at the computer I some time inhale while filling my tummy with air, then exhale and pull it in tight and squeeze the buttocks. May help!!, lol

Good Luck!!
