Hi everyone. I'm Bernard. I live in Observatory, Cape Town. I've decided to make it my mission to do my part in eradicating obesity in our society. I'm open to suggestions and is willing to learn from all you veterans on the issue!

Yeah..I vote option none of the above. What you are asking is why diet plans don't work and the reason is they don't actually address the issues. Instead of making a plan someone eats for the rest of their life and giving the tools they need to learn proper eating habits, they rely on gimmicks, tricks and misinformation all for a buck.

There are two kinds of diet plans: ones that work in the long term, and ones that (may) work in the short term. Most of the long term ones (eating calories under your maintenance level, exercise, getting enough vegetables, and vitamins) are really long term, months and even years long term. It's hard for many people to have will power that long. And not just that, it's hard to have that kind of patience. The short term ones don't give you information on how to sustain your weight loss, so you lose it, then revert to old habits and gain it back.

hi there.
I decided to create the poll and elicit responses from people struggling with weight issues....... My mom has been having weight issues since I can remember and it has led to her now suffering from Insulin-dependent Diabetes II, Hypertension and other issues. She has been on the Weigh-Less program for about 2yrs in the early 90's and reached her target weight, with no issues. I realised that this can only be done when you have a respected follow-up system, consultants who care about their clients, a readily available social network and most-important support from those near & dear to you........ the meaning of the poll is just to get a clearer picture of issues involving weight-loss and I thank all of you for your input thus far!
Keep voting and I appreciate every piece of interest.

You are asking about trying to get a clearer weight loss picture but all you asked about are diet programs. That right there is the problem. To lose weight effectively, it is something you do for the rest of your life. A vast majority of these programs don't actually help in that aspect because the user doesn't learn how to have a healthy lifestyle.

Call me a suspicious person...comes with being a mod on a site where there are so many people who come here not for weight loss support, but to try and prey on people who are desperate for answers for their own personal wealth.

I'm sure this can be said of SOME "diet programs", but not all of them.
Part of the problem is people's inability to take the basic tentpoles of a diet program and weave them into their daily life.

These diet plans (at least the good ones) exist to give people a jumping-off point; to give them information on the ins and outs of nutrition, because a lot of what people THINK they know about eating healthy in terms of calories and portion control, is just wrong.

I think far less people would lose weight or yield the kind of results they're looking for if they just ran with the basic principle of "eat less, move more".

I'm sorry for rambling a bit, I just don't think diet programs should be knocked so quickly, for there are a few choice ones out there.

It depends on what you call a 'diet program'. Technically, what I am doing in my life is a diet program. If we are talking programs you pay for, then I agree to your point there is one or two good ones..but just going by what he is asking for in choices..no.

I'm lucky enough to be on a "diet program" that, after learning how to follow it and obtaining a few very basic tools, can be done all on your own.

It's pretty steady, too, and easy to keep up with in terms of free news and information.

This poll was my initial entry into this forum.............the diet programs is my starting blocks..........if you have any suggestions, I'm always willing to listen. I want to get feed-back from people who went through diet programs and not any particular program. Why the negativity? It seems like you are crossing swords with me for posting this poll, and for what and why I don't know.........If you think it's crap, say so and don't even bother reading it.............

I love the Weight Watchers programme because it's all about teaching you to eat healthily and how to fit it into a normal lifestyle. It's based on the sort of foods that you will eat for the rest of your life and not at all gimmicky.
Stick around a bit longer and you will start to realize why we are a bit defensive about people coming in talking about fad diets. There are a lot of very vunerable people that come into these forums that need correct information and it makes us very protective of them.

Well, instead of putting up a poll focused on weight loss programs with products and all, how about tell us about yourself and your own weight loss journey? Are you overweight or are you trying to be an expert on the subject? I know you mentioned your mother, are you here for support for her?

My negativity comes from my overly suspicious mind when I see posts like this. When someone comes onto the board with a poll like this and seems not to actually being someone trying to lose weight, I look to see if the person is trying to gather data for other reasons than their own weight loss. Sorry if you think I'm being aggressive but it is who I am.
