(Assuming you haven´t already: ) If you can afford to expend the time and money a couple of visits to a physical therapist might be helpful to find new and more long-term ways of dealing with your back pain flare-ups. Full disclosure: I´m a physical therapist so I´m not completely independent but also: in the case of young, active people it works like that 9 times out of 10. We don´t like anything better than making ourselves superfluous by giving clients the tools to help themselves.

thank you elizab3th for the encouragement talking to people helps make this battles easier . the kids mom comes home and likes a drink now and then and the house is not a dry house, I have always had a bottle of bourbon and tequila in the cabinet for family and friends . but for me its if Im not blacked out im not done. my biggest thing Im not wanting my problem to become theirs. I had to ask my doc and he was hesitant to do it because of the side effects, (I guess they think there is no side affects of drinking half a litter a night) but I had done my research and this was what i wanted to try, he put me on this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disulfiram I know If I drink I puke, and talking to recovering addicts you are usually sick before the alcohol has time to take an effect. thanks for the encouragement I of course can't sleep tonight so tomorrow will be a long and glorious day. Im going to have to start exercising soon the only thing I dislike worse than eggs is exercise :D

lamaria I have been really thinking about that. usually I can go to a chiropractor once a month or so and be fine. the problem is my chiropractor who has been working on me since I fell out of a tree at 12 and landed on my head is now in her late 70s and is having her own heath issues . If I dont get some relief soon I will definitely be headed that way Im starting to do some basic stuff I can find on you tube. Im giving it until after thanksgiving if its not better I will be doing different options and I would much prefer pt to drugs

My guess is the pain flare up is directly related to the lifestyle changes you are making and the stress it is causing. Even though they are positive changes, we humans tend to hate change, and get stressed about it.

Physical therapy is definitely a good idea. Having dealt with chronic pain, I can say that meditation also works beautifully - in fact there are many clinical studies that show a consistent meditation practice is more effective for pain than drugs! An additional plus is that it really helps with reducing overall stress and just makes you feel great! Body scan meditations work really well for pain. Here are a few I use regularly:

Have you considered a program, like AA, for the drinking? I spent a lot of time in meetings when I first quit and it really, really helped. Just having others who understood what I was going through was a blessing. I still attend meetings, although these days not so much for myself. Now I go to help others who are struggling, which also helps me.

You are starting a wonderful journey, that takes a lot of courage and guts, even though it may not feel like it right now. There will be difficult times, but the best times of your life lay ahead. That I can promise! :)

Well not much to say today but its a nice calm day here, this a tough day to not eat to much so my numbers will be awfull tomorrow but there is always the day after right?

There'll always be a new day. Enjoy Thanksgiving, and if you can, try to fill up on better foods. No need to say no to anything, just work on portions!

Thanksgiving dinner is over and extended family has left, hallelujah, Im sitting here in the agony of being almost to stuffed to full. So working toward weight goals will start aagin tomorow.
i ended up going to the doc yesterday for my back, I rolled out of bed and threw my legs over the edge of the bed and almost landed on the floor, second time I have been in a docs 3 years, he put me on the table and tried lifting my legs told me my hamstrings and back muscles were way to tight and I needed to do some stretching exercises No duh doc :beathorse: but he did give me a list of exercizes to do and some muscle relaxants. I ended up sleeping 14 hours and have done the exercises once last night and again this morning not sure if he ment for me a stretch more than once a day what is the standard on stretching exercises?

If you´re hurting acutely you can stretch gently several times a day, making sure to keep proper posture in your lower back. As far as I know there is no scientific consensus on how long to "hold" the stretch but most people who aren´t gymnasts do 10-20 seconds. Silly but not unimportant question: sounds like your doc did a straight leg raise while you were on your back, right? Do you know approximately how many degrees he could lift your leg? If you have the doctors approval to move around (and it sounds like you do) try not to sit/lie down/stand for too long at a time. Especially standing still, but I´m sure you´ve noticed that one already. Walk (short distances!) again and again throughout the day if you can. while trying to move as normally as you can. Best of luck.

Lamaria I was only flexable to about 50 derees So Im a little stiff. im up early and the house is quiet, giving the streches a go hrough this morning. Back has loosened up a lot feeling great, minor pain across the lower back but hugely improved and read to plugging foward.

I don´t want to alarm you and of course I haven´t seen you so I don´t want to try to internet-diagnose you, but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_leg_raise Of course normally even if you do have a herniated disc the best course of action is gentle activity and then - after the acute pain has gone down - specific exercises with a PT. However: should you lose sensation or strength in (part of) your leg(s) at some point or lose control of your bladder be sure to see a doctor STAT.

i got busy and havent been on here in a few days The thanksgiving weekend turned into just a that a weekend of eating. But im still maintaining havent put any on. Thanks for all the advice on the back pain. its finally down to almost nothing. Now time to keep plodding along. Last weekend I went out to the shop and one of my uncles had stopped by, he didnt know I had stopped drinking and had left a liter of woodford Reserve bourbon in top of the toolbox. That was a tough one to give away an unopened bottle. i did succeed though. my wieght has not been coming off as fast as I would like it to. But i didnt put it on in a week and it will not come off in a week

Kudos for getting rid of that bottle! That must have been major temptation and I think it proves how serious you are about this. Not gaining weight after a week of eating is quite the win as well, so I´m sure you´ll be doing well now that stuff´s back to normal.

I'm really proud of you for giving away the bottle. I understand how hard that is to do, and you should feel proud of yourself as well! Christmas time is going to be a hard one for me to stay sober, but I'm looking at how many days I have under my belt and it would feel pretty shitty to see that number start back at 0 again.

Have an absolutely wonderful Friday!

Well done cruiser on giving away that bottle. You should be very proud of yourself! :)

life has been properly hectic the last few days so I haven't been able to be here. Back is healing up, the stretching has helped, i actually got out of bed for the last 2 mornings and just twinges, no pain. so Im on the road to recovery. For shits and giggles on sunday I loaded up a backpack with the 30 lbs I have lost this year and went for a mile walk on a river trail around here (thats a trail i used to jog with 50 lbs in my pack 5 years ago), that sure felt good to unload that when i got back to the truck. Just some self motivation for me to stay on this. did the low carb thing today and am feeling good. only thing is it has started getting cold here that makes keeping the water intake up a little difficult.
just some ramblings and thanks for all the encouragement.
