there are a few threads on the eating after 7 - and what it comes down it - is it's the amount of calories consumed in a day that contribute to weight loss -not necessarily when yu consume them.

welcome to the site.

your best place to start is to work on putting a plan together of healthy eating and exercise... start with that - then once you are comfortable making good choices move on to counting calories

Welcome aboard!

You should probably tell us a little more about yourself for some personalized guidance.

First place to start is definitely with your food intake. How much of it and where it should come from.

How are you eating now?

Shakes, bugs, burgers, veggies.... they all contain calories.

And calorie balance is what dictates your weight.

Shakes have no magic powers.

Welcome to the boards Essexbabe :)

That weekend boozing followed by a kebab is deadly isn't it. I used to be a doner king myself. If you want to lose weight, then you are going to have to cut those weekend cals. And if you don't you are probably going to get bigger and bigger. I like to party, but I've had to radically cut back the grog myself. When I do go down the pub or clubbing, I drink small bottles of beer, and a lot less of it .... and I skip that kebab on the way home!

Counting calories is a good weight loss method - along with changing to a healthier diet, becoming more active, and exercising even. It sounds boring, or even hard work, but there is no off the shelf quick fix i.e in a bottle or packet. If you want lasting weight loss and fitness, then thats the only way. The cals in that booze and kebab are probably horrendous!

However you do it, whatever method, then the best of luck to you - you are making a sensible decision. The later you leave it, the bigger the problem gets.

Heres the deal with meal replacement bars and shakes: Calories are calories!

Why do people lose weight on them and then gain it back when they switch back to normal food? It's simple really. When you eat a meal replacement or a prepared diet meal, your calories are controlled by the portion size. The people who gain weight back after getting off meal replacements usually never learned portion control or proper nutrition when it comes to dealing with real food so they're cooking with higher calorie ingredients and having larger portions.

There's no secret to it. Does it mean they aren't helpful? Not at all, they can be very helpful. For example I have a pretty fast paced job and when I can only take a short lunch break, a meal shake does the trick. I was also on a 3 day road trip and instead of fast food I stuck to meal replacements, fruits, veggies, and homemade sandwiches. I don't personally condone trying to replace the majority of your diet with these products but they can help control your calorie intake when you have a limited amount of time or choice.
